To achieve an A Rank in the Free Challenge Quest featuring Arch-tempered Rey Dau in Monster Hunter Wilds, it's recommended to use the crafted weapon 'Steel Assault.' The Steel Assault can fire Freeze Ammo Lv2 and has the same attack value as the Artian Ice Heavy Bowgun. Its weapon skill, Tetrad Shot, also allows you to increase your firepower.

'Precipice Malmiam' Can Also Be Used
The 'Precipice Malmiam,' forged from Jin Dahaad materials, is also a viable weapon choice. Its primary advantage is the ability to use 'Sleep Ammo' to set up a falling boulder opportunity for high damage output. However, the weapon's Attack stat is 15 points lower than that of the Artian Ice Heavy Bowgun and 'Steel Assault,' and it has the 'Guard Lv3' skill. As a result, the firepower of 'Freeze Ammo' is significantly reduced.

This is a General Build for melee weapons. By combining Lord's Soul and Gore Magala's Tyranny, you can boost both Attack and Affinity, reaching up to 90% Affinity with additional Critical-hit skills. With meal invites from various regions, 'Thunder Resistance' can be raised up to 20, effectively nullifying the troublesome 'Thunderblight'. If you don't need Earplugs, feel free to switch to a different Talisman.

Clearing Within 13 Minutes Qualifies for A Rank

▲A Rank Reward Pendant: [Rey Dau] Mark of Mastery
In Monster Hunter Wilds, you can achieve an A Rank in the Arch-tempered Rey Dau Free Challenge Quest by clearing it within 13 minutes. Earning an A Rank will reward you with all three types of exclusive Pendants, so aim for an A Rank clear.
Must Be Slain as Capture is Not Possible
The Arch-tempered Rey Dau appearing in the Free Challenge Quest cannot be captured. Even if it is weakened and caught in traps with tranquilizers applied, capturing is not possible due to the system's restrictions. Therefore, you must slay it to complete the quest.
Use Area 16 Bone Desert Camp to Cut Travel Time

If you want to shave even a second off your time for the Arch-tempered Rey Dau Free Challenge, it's recommended to set up camp in 'Area 16 Bone Desert'. It's slightly closer than 'Area 16 Northwest.'
Windward Plains Camp Locations & MapDisable the Support Hunter Setting in Advance

Support Hunters increase Arch-tempered Rey Dau's health based on the number of participants, just like in multiplayer, with its HP scaling up to over twice the base value. By default, a Support Hunter will automatically join the hunt, so it's recommended to set the Max Members count to 1, then challenge the quest solo.

Strategy Guide for A Rank in AT Rey Dau Challenge
Key Strategies
Ensure You Hit the Falling Pillar in Area 17
In the Free Challenge Quest for Arch-tempered Rey Dau, it's important to use the 'Falling Grounding Pillar' in Area 17, which can deal over 1700 damage and cause a long knockdown. Depending on the initial position, you may be able to hit directly, but using a Luring Pod to guide Rey Dau to a more favorable spot makes it easier to land the hit.
Falling Pillar Deals 5% Max Health
The Falling Boulder in Area 17 deals 1777.5 damage to Rey Dau, which is roughly 5% of its total health. Note that Arch Tempered Rey Dau has roughly 35,600 HP.
Sleep + Falling Pillar Deals 1.5x the Normal Damage
Pitfall Trap Placement | Gameplay Video |
---|---|
![]() |
By using Sleep alongside Falling Pillar, you can achieve a 1.5x damage multiplier, resulting in 2666.3 damage, which is equivalent to 7.5% of the monster's total Health. If you can put the monster to sleep near the Falling Pillar, a direct hit will work, but placing a Pitfall Trap at the position shown in the left image will allow for a more reliable hit. If you're struggling to land the Falling Pillar, combining it with a Pitfall Trap is the recommended strategy.
Flash Pods Can Trigger a Fall up to 3 Times

▲The 4th Flash Pod only staggers Arch-Tempered Rey Dau temporarily.
Flash Pods are still effective vs. Arch-Tempered Rey Dau, but the number of times you can knock it out of flight is limited to 3. Additionally, the flash effect duration is significantly shorter.
Break Weak Points or Wings for Opening
Arch-Tempered Rey Dau is resistant to Shock Traps and has high tolerance to Flash Pods, making it difficult to create attack opportunities. However, remembering to exploit weak points and part breaks to induce a knockdown can help turn the hunt in your favor. Being mindful of these mechanics can also shorten the hunting time.
Focus Strike the Exposed Horns
After the ultimate railgun attack, the horn on the head will expose a weak point. If you land a Focus Strike, you can trigger a special knockdown, creating an opening for powerful follow-up attacks.
Guaranteed Down From Part Break
Breaking Rey Dau's wings guarantees a knockdown. Given the limited means of restraining it, creating two guaranteed attack opportunities is significant, as it potentially reduces hunting time. Make sure to target this actively.
Don't Let the Monster Relocate
▲You can force the monster into a combat even during its relocation.
Moving from Area 17 is time-consuming, and frequent relocation to other areas can extend the overall clear time. To mitigate this, deploy a Luring Pod during the relocating phase to prevent the monster from moving. This will block its movement for a set duration, helping to reduce time spent and optimize efficiency.
Break Tempered Wounds for a Knockdown

By breaking the Tempered Wounds, you can guarantee a knockdown. However, the location of the Tempered Wounds changes with each encounter, and depending on the weapon type, it may be located in a spot that's difficult to reach. In such cases, reattempting the hunt is a viable option.
Break Glowing Blue Scale for Special Stagger
▲Special staggers can trigger from downed states and last around 8 seconds.
Damaging the blue scale on Arch-tempered Rey Dau's wings and tail can trigger a special stagger, disabling its follow-up attacks for about 8 seconds. Once a wing tip is broken, try targeting the tail to trigger another stagger.
Confirmed to Occur in 2 Patterns
1st Time | Occurs when both wings' blue shells are broken and the tail is severed. |
---|---|
2nd Time | Breaking the blue shells on both wings. |
Arch-tempered Rey Dau's special stagger is triggered by breaking the blue scales on its wings and tail. Currently, we have confirmed that the first special stagger occurs when both wings' blue shells are broken and the tail is severed, while the second special stagger occurs when both wings' shells are broken.
What to Do if Support Hunter Joins

Support Hunters increase Arch-tempered Rey Dau's health based on the number of participants, just like in multiplayer, with its HP scaling up to over twice the base value. By default, a Support Hunter will automatically join the hunt, so it's recommended to set the Max Members count to 1, then challenge the quest solo.

Hunters | Boulder Damage | Est. HP |
---|---|---|
1 | 1777.5 | Approx. 35,600 |
2 | 3021.8 | Approx. 60,450 (Approx. 1.7x) |
3 | 3839.4 | Approx. 76,800 (Approx. 2.16x) |
4 | 3839.4 | Approx. 76,800 (Approx. 2.16x) |
Even with NPC Support Hunters, Rey Dau's health increases based on the number of participants. Testing showed no difference in Falling Pillar damage between 3 and 4 players. If you're aiming for an A Rank, try challenging the hunt without Support Hunters.
