What is Sharpness?

Sharpness Gauge in Melee Weapons

Sharpness Gauge

In Monster Hunter Wilds, Sharpness refers to the gauge found in Melee Weapons. It is displayed in color at the top left of the screen and gradually depletes as you deal damage or when attacks are deflected.

Some Weapon Action also Consume Sharpness

WeaponAction
Great Sword/Charge BladeGuard
GunlanceShelling

Weapons like the Great Sword, Charge Blade, and Gunlance consume Sharpness not only through melee attacks but also through certain special actions. Be mindful of Sharpness depletion outside of standard melee strikes, depending on the weapon you use.

Higher Sharpness Increases Firepower

Higher Sharpness Bigger Damage

The better the Sharpness, the higher the firepower. Conversely, lower Sharpness reduces firepower and makes it harder to deal damage as attacks get deflected. To maintain effectiveness, consider increasing the maximum Sharpness with equipment or reducing Sharpness consumption.

Depleted Sharpness can be Recovered

Recover Sharpness

Sharpness can be restored using an item called the Whetstone and other methods. Make sure to regularly recover Sharpness during combat breaks to maintain your weapon’s effectiveness.

Sharpness Changes Color Based on Its Level

SharpnessPhysical ModifierElemental Modifier
Red0.50.25
Orange0.750.5
Yellow1.00.75
Green1.051.0
Blue1.21.063
White1.321.15
Purple1.391.27

Sharpness has two types of modifiers: Physical and Elemental, both of which increase damage as Sharpness improves. For example, in the case of Physical damage, Purple Sharpness deals 1.39 times the damage of Yellow Sharpness.

Maintain at least White Sharpness

The difference in damage and attack effectiveness between White and Blue Sharpness is significant. When setting up your equipment, prioritize extending White Sharpness over increasing attack power. On the other hand, Purple Sharpness provides only a slight damage increase compared to White Sharpness. Therefore, as long as you can maintain White Sharpness, you’ll be fine.

How to Restore Sharpness

Recover Sharpness with Items Like Whetstones

Recover Sharpness with Whetstone

The most common way to recover Sharpness is by using items like Whetstones. Among Sharpness recovery items, the 'Whetfish Fin' restores more Sharpness and requires fewer uses compared to a Whetstone.

Skills to Reduce Sharpness Consumption

Skills like 'Razor Sharp,' 'Master's Touch,' and 'Protective Polish' help reduce Sharpness consumption. By minimizing the time spent on Sharpness recovery during combat, you can complete quests more efficiently.

Handicraft Increases Sharpness Gauge

The Handicraft skill increases Sharpness Gauge, and for certain weapons, it can even upgrade the sharpness color, boosting firepower. However, it cannot exceed the weapon's maximum sharpness limit.

Speed Sharpening Reduces Vulnerability

Since you can't attack while using a Whetstone, it creates an opening for enemies. With Speed Sharpening, you can sharpen faster, reducing your vulnerability and lowering the risk of taking damage.
