Key Strategies

1Make Use of Falling Boulders
2Use Up to 3 Flash Pods
3Avoid New Thunder Follow-Up Attack
4Thunder Follow-up Temporary Nullified After Knockdown
5Expose Weak Points or Break Wings for Opportunities
6Lure to Area 17

Make Use of Falling Boulders

In Area 17 of the initial zone for Arch-tempered Rey Dau, there is a spear-shaped 'Falling Boulder'. With precise timing, it can deal significant damage, so be sure to use it during combat. Depending on your positioning, it is possible to land the Falling Boulder right from the start.

Falling Boulder Deals 5% Max Health

In the event quest A Silent Flash. the Falling Boulder in Area 17 deals 1777.5 damage to Rey Dau, which is roughly 5% of its total health. Note that Arch Tempered Rey Dau has roughly 35,600 HP.

Use Environmental Features

Environmental FeaturesAreaDamageHealth Ratio
Thunderstone Falling BoulderArea 171777.5Approx 5%
QuicksandArea 121066.5Approx 3%
Sharp Crystal PillarArea 51422.0Approx 4%
Falling BoulderArea 71422.0Approx 4%
Falling BoulderArea 11422.0Approx 4%
ThorngrassArea 853Approx 0.149%

For those who aren't used to fighting Arch-tempered Ray Dau, making use of the Falling Boulder in each area is a great alternative. Use a Luring Pod to bring Rey Dau to the following areas: 17 → 5 → 1 →7. It is possible to deal roughly 30% of Rey Dau's health with Environmental Features alone.

Use Up to 3 Flash Pods

Use Flash 3 Times

▲The 4th Flash Pod only staggers Arch-Tempered Rey Dau temporarily.

Flash Pods are still effective vs. Arch-Tempered Rey Dau, but the number of times you can knock it out of flight is limited to 3. Additionally, the flash effect duration is significantly shorter.

Avoid New Thunder Follow-Up Attack

Attacks where Arch-Tempered Rey Dau swings the blue parts of its wings or performs electric (lightning) attacks now include a delayed thunder follow-up (small explosion) at the point of impact.

While the regular Rey Dau's version of these attacks could be fully blocked with 'Guard' alone, the Arch-Tempered version introduces a small explosion that can still cause damage even when guarded.

Thunder Follow-up Temporary Nullified After Knockdown

When Arch-tempered Rey Dau is critically knocked down and the effect of thunder dissipating from its horns occurs, it will expose a large opening. Additionally, until the thunder falls onto the horns, the thunder follow-up attacks won't trigger, making it considerably easier to press the attack. Take advantage of this opportunity to attack aggressively.

Confirmed to Occur in 2 Patterns

1st TimeOccurs when both wings' blue shells are broken and the tail is severed.
2nd TimeBreaking the blue shells on both wings.

The special stagger of Rey Dau is highly likely to be related to the destruction of the blue shells and the severing of the tail. Currently, we have confirmed that the first special stagger occurs when both wings' blue shells are broken and the tail is severed, while the second special stagger occurs when both wings' shells are broken.

Expose Weak Points or Destroy Wings

Arch-Tempered Rey Dau is resistant to Shock Traps and has high tolerance to Flash Pods, making it difficult to create attack opportunities. However, remembering to exploit weak points and part breaks to induce a knockdown can help turn the hunt in your favor. Being mindful of these mechanics can also shorten the hunting time.

Focus Strike the Exposed Horns After its Ultimate Attack

After the ultimate railgun attack, the horn on the head will expose a weak point. If you land a Focus Strike, you can trigger a special knockdown, creating an opening for powerful follow-up attacks.

Guaranteed Down from Wing Part Break

Breaking Rey Dau's wings guarantees a knockdown. Given the limited means of restraining it, creating two guaranteed attack opportunities is significant, as it potentially reduces hunting time. Make sure to target this actively.

Lure Rey Dau Away From Area 17

▲Additional Follow-up attacks in area 17

Arch-tempered Rey Dau, gains additional attacks in area 17, attacks that make contact with the ground will have a follow-up thunder attack. It is recommended to move to a different area, after using the Falling Boulder by using a Luring Pod or Dung Pod.

Use Grounding Pod in Area 17

Grounding Pod

If you hit Rey Dau's Horn with the Slinger ammo found in area 17, it will stun Rey Dau. Alternatively, you can shoot it towards the ground in Area 17 to make some of the area safe.

How to Fight Arch-tempered Rey Dau

1Be Aware of Thunder Follow-up Attack
2Dodge Aerial Flips by Walking
3Slip Under to Evade Wing Sweeps
4Capitalize Openings During Landing After Aerial Attacks
5Use Evade to Escape Downward Discharge's Wide AoE

Be Aware of Thunder Follow-up Attack

Almost all attacks are followed by a thunder follow-up, so treating every attack as a two-hit sequence is crucial. Avoid returning to the blast zone after evading the primary strike, and prepare for a second guard after the first if blocking. Keeping this in mind can significantly reduce incoming damage.

Dodge Aerial Flips by Walking

▲Evade like in the video. A follow-up attack will land at your previous spot, so avoid return to it.

You can evade the aerial flip by continuously moving, such as by walking. The monster tracks your position until it begins to descend, so keep moving sideways to shift the landing spot.

When evading, avoid doing it too early, as this increases the chance of getting hit. Wait until the monster starts descending, then evade for a more reliable escape.

Slip Under to Evade Wing Sweeps

▲Depending on your position, you may be able to evade by moving forward.

To reliably evade the wing swipe with follow-up attacks, move between the legs. If you have increased Evade Extender, you can dodge forward with a single evade, or dodge backward twice to avoid both the follow-up and wing hit, then attack the wings directly. However, be cautious of any follow-up attacks.

Capitalize Openings During Landing After Aerial Attacks

After Arch-tempered Rey Dau completes an aerial attack and lands, it doesn't immediately chain into another attack, creating an opening to strike. During the flying phase, either use a Flash Pod to bring it down or focus on evading, then capitalize on the opening to attack.

Use Evade to Escape Downward Discharge's Wide AoE

The attack where Arch-tempered Rey Dau points its head straight down and releases a downward discharge has a hitbox larger than the visual effect suggests. A single evade without Evade Extender often won't be enough to avoid it.

To evade, dodge twice in the same direction. If guarding, prepare to block twice to cover both the initial hit and the follow-up.

Often Performed as a Follow-up From Another Attack

The downward discharge is rarely executed from a stationary state and often branches abruptly from the end of another attack. For this reason, it's best to closely watch the head movement. Once Rey Dau lowers its head, be ready to evade immediately.

Guaranteed Transition to Flight After Discharge

After the downward discharge, Arch-Tempered Rey Dau always transitions into a flight state and may follow up with aerial discharges. This creates an opportunity to use a Flash Pod, so be ready to take advantage of it.

Differences From the Regular Variant

Changes From the Normal Variant

1Significant Increase in Health and Attack
2Flash Pods Effective for 3 Shots, Only Staggers Afterwards
3Nearly All Attacks Have Additional Thunder Effect
4New Lightning Attack

The differences between Arch-tempered Rey Dau and its regular variant in Monster Hunter Wilds are as follows: a significant increase in Health and Attack, Flash Pods causing a knockdown up to 3 times with a very short stagger duration, Thunder follow-up added to nearly all attacks, and the introduction of a new move of lightning burst.

Much Higher Health and Attack

NormalArch-Tempered
HealthAbout 18,000About 35,600

Arch-tempered Rey Dau has double health compared to the normal variant in Monster Hunter Wilds. The attacks are also much stronger and without adequate Thunder Resistance or Defense, you will suffer heavy damage. Until you get used to the fight, make sure to activate Thunder Resistance Lv3.

Flash Pods Effective for 3 Shots Only

In the regular variant, Flash Pods were effective for up to 6 times, but for Arch-tempered Rey Dau, Flash Pods are only effective for 3 times. Additionally, from the first Flash Pod, the duration of the flash effects has been reduced to the point where it's almost negligible. After the fourth Flash Pod, it becomes ineffective.

Additional Thunder Effect

For Arch-tempered Rey Dau, nearly all attacks have a Thunder follow-up effect (small explosion), often resulting in taking damage right after guarding an attack. Depending on the weapon type, focusing on evading rather than guarding may help reduce the damage taken.

New Lightning Attack

A new lighting burst move has been added, where Rey Dau shoots an electric attack while facing straight down. The attack activates quickly and has a wide explosion radius, so it's best to either guard or quickly create distance to avoid it.

By carefully selecting the ingredients for your Meals, you can reduce the likelihood of being carted during combat. Ingredients like 'Sild Garlic', which grants the Guts skill, allow you to survive a one-hit KO with 1 HP. 'Kunafa Cheese' provides a defense boost, enhancing your defense to mitigate damage. Additionally, if you're taking frequent hits, 'Eastern Honey' can be beneficial as it increases recovery amounts, helping you regain more health over time.
