Combining Lance & Shelling For Combat

Characteristics
Lance- Lance has a cutting (severing) attribute.
- It has a long reach overall, including directly above.
ShellsShells- Damage including fire element that ignores monster's armor.
- When the shelling hits the ground, it ignites and causes damage.
- Shelling consumes sharpness.
Ammo is loaded through Reload and Quick Reload.

In Monster Hunter Wilds, when using the Gunlance, it's important to understand the characteristics of both the Lance and Shelling and combine them for attacks. If you want to make the most of your reach, use the lance; if the monster's armor is tough, use shelling. Master the strengths and characteristics of each to hunt efficiently.

Master Wyrmstake Shot & Wyvern Gauge

Characteristics
Wyrm ShotWyrmstake Shot- You can attach a stake to the monster with Wyrmstake Cannon
- Damage occurs multiple times at the hit location.
- Ammo is loaded only through Reload.
Wyrm GaugeWyvern Gauge- Gauge is required for Wyvern's Fire
- Wyvern's Fire deals damage that includes fire element, ignoring the monster's armor.
- The gauge regenerates through attack hits or over time.

The Gunlance has powerful actions, including the 'Wyrmstake Shot' and 'Wyvern's Fire.' Each has its own specific ammo and gauge, so be sure to understand these characteristics as well.

Guard While Launching Attacks

How To Do
Hold

The Gunlance's shield naturally has high guard performance, so you should primarily focus on guarding while exploiting opening to attack. When guarding isn't required, you can use steps or moving sweeps to fine-tune your position and launch attacks.

A Power Clash May Occur Depending On The Monster's Attack

How To Power Clash After Guard
Hold
During Power Clash Repeatedly

When guarding against certain monster attacks, a new feature called 'Power Clash' will occur. If you win the Power Clash, you'll have the opportunity to attack the monster, so be sure to wind the clash and aim for a follow-up attack.

Carefully Manage Reloads During Combat

During Combo +
Quick Reload

Shelling consumes ammo, so be sure to reload your shells and Wyrmstake Shots between attacks. While only shells are affected by regular reload, Quick Reload allows you to quickly reload during a monster's attack opening.

Both Types Of Reload Have A Guard Point

In Monster Hunter Wilds, both Reload and Quick Reload have a guard point at the start of the action (when the shield glows white.) This will automatically block attacks immediately. You can replenish ammo during the reload and after the guard point, transition into combos or shelling.

Use Powerful Wyrmstake Cannon Follow-Up Attack

How To Do
+

Once you're familiar with the basic strategies, make sure to incorporate the 'Wyrmstake Cannon,' one of Gunlance's attack methods. The Wyrmstake Cannon deals multiple hits to the struck area, so it's important to actively fire it alongside your shelling.

▼Number Of Wyrmstake Shot & Loading Method

During moments like when a monster is down, the 'Wyrmstake Full Blast,' which consumes all Wyrmstake Shots and Shells, is highly effective. Additionally, after using the 'Wyrmstake Full Blast,' pressing △or◯ will trigger the Multi Wyrmstake Full Blast, dealing even more damage.

Aim For High-Damage Wyvern's Fire

How To Do
++

When an attack opportunity arises, it's crucial to aim for the high-damage 'Wyvern's Fire.' Like regular shelling, the 'Wyvern's Fire' deals damage that includes fire elements and ignores the monster's armor, allowing you to deal substantial damage even against tough armor.

▼Consuming & Regenerating Wyvern Gauge
Wyvern GaugeWyvern Gauge- Each use of Wyvern's Fire consumes 1 Wyvern Gauge.
- You can fire Wyvern's Fire up to two times in a row.
- The gauge recovers through landing attacks or over time.

Long Range With Caution For Friendly Fire

The Wyvern's Fire in Monster Hunter Wilds has a long range and, in 'Focus Mode,' allows for directional adjustment, making it easier to hit monsters. However, if it hits an ally, it can knock them down, so exercise caution during multiplayer.

No Guard Point During Movement

It has been confirmed that the Wyvern's Fire in Monster Hunter Wilds does not have a guard point. This means it cannot block incoming attacks during its animation. Be mindful that you cannot use it the same way as in previous titles.
