The table above is the result of taking a rest 20 times under each environment in both locales. Mizutsune appeared approximately 50% of the time in the Scarlet Forest during both Fallow and Inclemency.

Out of the 24 Mizutsune encounters, only 4 of them turned out to be Tempered variants, which is about a 5% appearance rate. With this information, it is assumed that the spawn rates of a Tempered Mizutsune are quite rare.

Mizutsune Strategy Tips

1Prepare Cleanser to Prevent Bubbbleblight
2Be Mindful of Positioning to Avoid Bubble Attacks
3Use Flash or Traps When the Head Turns Blue
4Down the Monster by Breaking the Head Part
5Down with Focus Strike After a Breath Attack

Prepare Cleanser to Counter Bubbleblight

When fighting Mizutsune in Monster Hunter Wilds, bring Cleanser items to counter Bubbleblight. Bubbleblight affects your movement by making it slippery and adds extra damage when hit. It's recommended to recover from it as soon as possible by using a Cleanser.

Minor BubbleblightCauses evasive actions to slip. Additional damage is taken when hit by enemy attacks.
Major BubbleblightIn addition to the above, movement becomes more difficult.

After the blue flames appear, Bubbleblight turns into Fireblight.

After the blue flames appear from Mizutsune's head, the Bubbleblight effect from the bubble attacks turns into Fireblight, making you more susceptible to damage. Fireblight can be quickly cured with an Evade action, so it's best to deal with it by performing consecutive evades.

Be Mindful of Positioning to Avoid Bubble Attacks

Mizutsune disperses bubbles while rampaging with multiple actions. During this, you have three options: 'stay close to avoid the bubbles,' 'adjust your position based on the bubble trajectory,' or 'destroy the incoming bubbles.' Choose the approach that suits you best.

White/Fire Bubbles Cause Damage, Green Recovers HP, Red Increases Attack

Mizu Bubble Colors have different effect

Mizutsune has four types of bubbles: White causes damage, Green recovers health, Red increases attack power, and Flaming Bubbles cause high damage and apply Fireblight. White, Green, and Red Bubbles inflict Bubbleblight while Flaming Bubbles don't cause Bubbleblight but deal significant damage. Adapt to the situation by destroying or evading them but at the same time moving towards the Red and Green bubbles.

Bubble ColorEffect
WhiteDamage + Bubbleblight
GreenHealth Recovery + Bubbleblight
RedIncrease Attack by 20 for 30 Seconds + Bubbleblight
White (Flaming)High Damage + Fireblight

Use Flash or Traps When the Head Turns Blue

When blue flames erupt from Mizutsune's head, the nature of its bubble attacks changes, and its attacks become more intense. If you find it difficult to handle, use Flash or Traps to immobilize its legs and create an opportunity to attack.

Down the Monster by Breaking the Head Part

Breaking Mizutsune's head has a high chance of causing a knockdown. Be mindful of the timing to break it, and by increasing the restraint duration, you can shorten the hunt time.

Other Weak Spots

Breaking a Mizutsune's claws have a high chance of causing a knock-down. Try to adjust your position in such a way that you can land attacks on either of its claws to temporarily debilitate the monster. Try to destroy these parts when the monster isn't downed to make the most of it.

Down with Focus Strike After a Breath Attack

After Mizutsune performs a downward breath attack, it exposes a weak point on its head, creating a window for a Focus Strike to knock it down. This can stagger Mizutsune for a few seconds, so don't miss the opportunity to land a Focus Strike.

How to Fight Mizutsune

1Avoid Getting Hit by Too Many Bubble Attacks
2Identify 3 Types of Breath Attacks by Their Pre-Attack Motions
3Uppercut or Tail Swipe After a Sudden Charge
4Attacks is More Intense After Emitting Blue Flames
 - Enraged state ends after a set time or when exhausted.
5Dodge Quickly Left or Right When It Spins in the Air
6Vertical to Horizontal Breath Attack is Added During Enraged

Avoid Getting Hit by Too Many Bubble Attacks

Mizutsune has a variety of bubble attacks, and getting hit by them inflicts 'Bubbleblight,' making you slippery and vulnerable to additional damage. While avoiding all bubble attacks can be difficult, accumulating too much Bubbleblight results in a 'Major Bubbleblight' status, which is particularly dangerous and complicates combat. Be cautious not to get hit by too many bubble attacks.

Identify 3 Types of Breath Attack by Their Pre-Attack Motions

Mizutsune uses three types of breath attacks: Wide Sweep, Vertical Stream passing from above or below, and Exploding Breath Attack. Watch for the pre-attack movements and avoid them using the right strategy.

Wide Sweep Breath Attack

▲Depending on the slope and situation, it may not hit.

When Mizutsune rolls its head inward, and water bursts from its mouth, it performs a Wide Sweep Breath Attack. The range is very wide, and if you're in front of Mizutsune, it's almost certain to hit. Use an emergency Evade or Guard to counter it.

During Vertical Stream, Move Left or Right

▲Be cautious of evading too early, as Mizutsune moves its head significantly to the side.

When Mizutsune shoots a breath attack upwards or downwards, it will follow up with a vertical breath attack. It generally only hits in a straight line, so when you see the breath attack and the head lowering, move to the left or right.

For Breath Attack with Explosion, Quickly Retreat

When Mizutsune slightly raises its head, looks at its feet, and charges water in its mouth, it's the pre-attack motion to an explosion breath attack. The window to react is short, but quickly move away from the explosion's epicenter. After this action, a weak spot will be exposed, creating an opportunity to attack.

Sudden Charge → Uppercut Attack or Tail Swipe

UppercutTail Swipe

Mizutsune quickly closes the distance and will either perform an uppercut with its tail or a horizontal tail swipe. During this, 'the uppercut has a slight charge time,' and 'the tail swipe lands with its front legs before swinging its tail to smash,' so watch closely for the signs right before the attack. Neither of these attacks has an immediate hit detection, so either use Guard to counter or multiple Evades backward to avoid them.

Attacks is More Intense After Emitting Blue Flames (Enraged)

▲The Explosion Breath Attack has a noticeable visual change as well.

After Mizutsune releases blue flames from its left eye (enraged), many of its attacks will be accompanied by Fireblight, and their power will significantly increase. The recovery time after attacks will also be much shorter, making its attacks much more intense. Instead of attacking recklessly, focus on carefully targeting the openings after its attacks.

Delay the Soulseer Transformation

Mizutsune's enraged Soulseer state is triggered after reducing its HP to a certain point and destroying it's head. It will be difficult to avoid the destruction of its head, so just remember it will eventually enter this state.

Dodge Quickly Left or Right When It Spins in the Air

If Mizutsune jumps and starts spinning vertically in place, a powerful tail smash attack will follow. Once you see the spin, prepare by moving left or right or using a Guard to brace for the attack.

Vertical to Horizontal Breath Attack when Enraged

During the blue flame state or when enraged, a vertical breath attack → horizontal breath attack sequence is added. Even if you evade the vertical breath attack, there is a high chance of follow-up attacks, so remain cautious.

5Destroy Tempered Wounds to Down the Monster

Tempered Monsters Are Extremely Powerful at 8★

Normal vs Tempered ★ Monster

The normal Mizutsune appears in 5★ Quests, but the Tempered Mizutsune appears in 8★ Quests, with various elements such as Health and attack power significantly enhanced.

Tempered Monsters Have Tempered Wounds Added

Tempered Mizutsune has added Tempered Wounds. Like regular wounds, they can be destroyed, and breaking them can lead to a knockdown. Be sure to focus on aiming for the 'Scar' while also breaking the 'Wounds'. Additionally, destroying Tempered Wounds will cause items like Slinger Heavy Ammo to drop, which can be useful for the hunt.

Early Soulseer State

A Tempered Mizutsune immediately transforms into its Soulseer state once its head has been destroyed, which means you will be facing its enraged state much sooner than you might expect. This can also be used to your advantage if you want to trigger Agitator much sooner.

High Enemy Firepower, Use Skills for Defense

▲As a Gunner, there is a possibility of being one-shot by the tail attack.

Tempered Mizutsune have significantly increased attacks compared to regular ones, making most of their attacks much more painful. If you're not familiar with the fight, it’s a good idea to strengthen your armor and consider incorporating defense skills like Divine Blessing into your setup.

Avoid Getting Greedy and Always Evade

Tempered Mizutsune has a significantly increased frequency of bubble attacks compared to its normal form, raising the likelihood of getting hit by them. Additionally, focusing too much on dealing with the bubbles may leave you vulnerable to the main body’s attacks. It's important not to be too greedy with attacks and always maintain enough room to evade.

Destroy Tempered Wounds to Down the Monster

Tempered Wounds will guarantee a knockdown when destroyed while the monster is getting up. In the case of Mizutsune's Tempered Wounds, they are scattered around areas like the base of the tail, the back right leg, and the front left leg. Focus on targeting these parts and aim to create attack opportunities by destroying the Tempered Wounds for a knockdown.
