The Charge Blade is an adaptable weapon that can morph between two modes: Sword Mode, or Axe mode. Both modes have their own pros and cons, so it is important to familiarize yourself with how each mode interplays with the other to truly master the Charge Blade.

Charge With the Sword, Discharge With the Axe

Widely recognized as the most technical weapon in all of Monster Hunter, the Charge Blade's gameplay can be broken down into stages. Start by charging phials with the sword, then apply weapon buffs with the phials, next re-charge phials/overcharged phials, and finally consume/discharge phials with the axe.

Charge Phials in Sword Mode

How To Do Sword Attacks To Charge Phial
Hold
Hold

Yellow Sword Energy (Phials): 3 charges
Red Sword Energy (Phials): 5 charges

First, attack with Sword Mode to fill the phials with energy, which are visible in the top-left corner of the screen. Particularly, holding ◯ button to perform the Charged Double Slash makes it easier to charge energy. When the phials turn yellow, you can charge 3 phials. When the phials turn red, you can charge all 5 phials.

Excess Energy from the Charge "Overcharges" the Phials

Overcharged Phial Mechanics
Monster Hunter Wilds (MH Wilds) - Overcharged PhialsOvercharged Phials- Generated if phials are already full when storing sword energy.
- Further boosts attacks that consume phials.
- When Shield Boost is performed with a charged phial, the duration is extended.

When phials are already charged, storing sword energy again will enhance the excess phials. This allows you to increase the damage of phial-based attacks like 'Amped Element Discharge' and extend the duration of Elemental Boost.

Prioritize Elemental Boost

How To Do Shield: Elemental Boost
(While Charging) Hold
Shield: Elemental Boost (Elemental Roundslash)
+ (Partway )

Once the phials are charged, activate Shield: Elemental Boost (Shield Boost). This grants an increased damage boost in Axe Mode, while also enabling the use of Super Amped Element Discharge (SAED).

Alternatively, you can press R2 partway through an Amped Element Discharge (AED) to chain into Elemental Roundslash and activate Shield: Elemental Boost.

Sword Boost Makes Attacks Immune To Deflects

How To Do Sword Boost
(While Charging) Hold

After activating Elemental Boost, apply Sword Boost if possible. This makes sword attacks apply phial effects and nullifies deflection, making it easier to attack monsters with tough hides and scales.

Master Element Discharges

How To Do Element Discharge → Amped Element Discharge
(Axe Mode)

Once you have some phials, aggressively attack using the Axe Mode's phial-based attacks. Prioritize spending your phials on Element Discharge into Amped Element Discharge before morphing back to sword mode to recharge more phials. This is the main offensive loop of the Charge Blade.

Utilize Focus Mode To Adjust Attacks

How To Do
Hold + + Attack Commands

When using attacks like 'Element Discharge' or 'Amped Element Discharge' on a monster, you can adjust the direction of your attack by using Focus Mode. This is especially important for the Charge Blade since it takes some effort to re-prepare for another Element or Amped Element Discharge.

Power Axe Buff Application

How To Do
Hold +
Focus Slash: Double Rend

The easiest way to activate Power Axe Mode is by using Focus Slash: Double Rend on a monster's wounds. While this buff is active, your Axe Mode attacks will apply multiple hits while consuming only half a phial per attack, which allows you to deal damage more efficiently.

Wounds Guide

All Activation Methods

How To Do
- Hit wounds with a Focus Slash: Double Rend.
- After Perfect Guard, press △ for Savage Axe Slash.
- After Power Clash, press △ for Savage Axe Slash.
- Execute a Mounted Finisher.

Power Axe Mode is the most difficult buff to trigger since it typically involves special interactions with monsters before activating. However, a sly Hunter can self-activate this buff by Perfect Guarding a self-placed Barrel Bomb and chaining it into Savage Axe Slash.

Super Amped Element Discharge (SAED)

How To Do SAED
Amped Element Discharge
+
 ➡ Super Amped Element Discharge
+

Super Amped Element Discharge (SAED) is a powerful attack that consumes all phials and can only be used when Elemental Boost is active. In Monster Hunter Wilds, loop combos involving Element Discharge and Amped Element Discharge while in Axe Mode are the staple, but SAED is still the singular highest damage attack of the Charge Blade.

SAED Conditions

In Monster Hunter Wilds, if you want to perform a Super Amped Element Discharge (SAED), you can only do so after an AED, an AED Follow-up, or after guarding. Be aware that, unlike previous titles, you cannot transition into it from moves like Shield Thrust.

Win Power Clashes

How To Do Power Clash
Hold
(During Power Clash) Press Rapidly

When you Guard against certain monster attacks, a new feature called 'Power Clash' is triggered. Winning a Power Clash creates an opportunity to land powerful moves like 'Amped Element Discharge' on the monster. Make sure to win the clash and follow up with a counterattack.

Power Clash Guide

Use Guard Points (GP) Effectively

When wielding the Charge Blade, there are certain actions that have auto-guard effects known as Guard Points (GP). GPs allow the Hunter to block monster attacks in between their combo strings, making for extremely fluid gameplay while fighting. Mastering Guard Points is a tactic mainly used by advanced Charge Blade players, so once you're comfortable with the basics, try to incorporate them into your gameplay.

Guard Points Glow White

Typically performed at the end of certain actions, you can easily identify a GP by waiting for your shield to temporarily shimmer a white color. This signals that the GP is active, and any attacks received during this period will be blocked.
