The key to using the Charge Blade in Monster Hunter Wilds is understanding the features of Shield: Elemental Boost, Sword Boost, Power Axe, and Phial Charged. Be sure to remember these points using the table above as a reference.

Features Of Sword & Axe Modes

Characteristics
Sword- Faster movement speed.
- Many quick and agile attacks but lower damage output.
- Can charge phials.
- Can guard with shield and guard point techniques.
Axe- Slower movement speed.
- Longer weapon reach but larger vulnerabilities.
- Many high-damage attacks that consume phials.

It is important to understand the various enhancements and features of Sword and Axe Modes. These are various differences, such as movement speed, guarding, and attack methods.

First, Charge The Phials With Sword Mode

How To Do Sword Attacks To Charge Phial
Hold
Hold

First, attack with Sword Mode to fill the phials with energy, visible in the top-left corner of the screen. Particularly, holding ◯ button to perform the 'Charged Doubled Slash' makes it easier to charge energy. When the energy is yellow, you can charge 3 phials, and when it's red, you can charge 5 phials.

Excess Energy From The Charge Enhances The Phials

Characteristics
PhialPhial Charged- When Phials are already full, the surplus will enhance the phial.
- Increase attack damage that uses phials.
- When Shield Boost is performed with a charged phial, the duration is extended.

When phials are already charged, charging again will enhance the excess phials. This allows you to increase the damage of phial-based attacks like 'Amped Element Discharge' and extend the duration of Shield: Elemental Boost.

After Charging Phials, Prioritize Shield Boost

Once the phials are charged, activate Shield: Elemental Boost (Shield Boost). This grants increased performance and a damage boost in Axe Mode, while also enabling the use of 'Super Amped Elemental Discharge (SAED)'. Additionally, you can press R2 partway SAED to chain into 'Elemental Roundslash' and activate Shield: Elemental Boost.

Sword Boost Makes Attacks Immune To Deflects

How To Do
While Charging Hold

After activating Shield Boost, it's helpful to also perform Sword Boost if possible. This makes sword attacks immune to deflections and triggers phial follow-up damage, making it easier to attack monsters with tough hide.

Mastering Axe: Element Discharge & Amped Element Discharge (AED)

How To Do Element Discharge → Amped Element Discharge
In Axe Mode

Once you're ready, actively attack using Axe Mode's phial-based attacks. Focus on using 'Element Discharge' and 'Amped Element Discharge (AED).' When the phials are depleted, switch to Sword Mode to charge the phials again. This tactic is the most important for Charge Blade.

Utilize Focus Mode To Adjust The Direction

How To Do
Hold+ + Attack Commands

When using attacks like 'Element Discharge' or 'Amped Element Discharge' on a monster, you can adjust the direction using Focus Mode (Hold L2 + Use Left Stick). Adjust your aim to hit moving monsters more accurately.

Enhance Axe With Focus Slash: Double Rend

How To Do
Hold+
Focus Slash: Double Rend

When the monster has a Wounds, use Focus Slash: Double Rend to hit it and enhance your Axe to Power Axe Mode. With Power Axe Mode, your Axe attacks will multi-hit with a button hold, and the phial consumption will decrease, allowing you to deal damage more efficiently.

Power Axe Mode With Savage Axe Slash & Mounted Finisher

How To Do
- Hit the Wound with Focus Slash: Double Rend.
- After Perfect Guard, press △ for Savage Axe Slash.
- After Power Clash, press △ for Savage Axe Slash.
- Can perform a mounted finisher.

Power Axe Mode can also be achieved through Savage Axe Slash, which can be performed after a Perfect Guard or a Power Clash. Additionally, you can perform a mounted finisher on a monster, so be sure to transition or maintain the Power Axe Mode, depending on the situation.

Super Amped Elemental Discharge (SAED): A Powerful Option

Super Amped Elemental Discharge

'Super Amped Elemental Discharge (SAED)' is a powerful attack that consumes all phials when the shield is enhanced. In Monster Hunter Wilds, loop combos involving 'Element Discharge' and 'Amped Element Discharge' while in Axe Boost Mode are highly effective, but SAED remains a valuable option as well.

Can Perform Only After AED, AED Follow-up, Or Guarding

In Monster Hunter Wilds, if you want to perform Super Amped Elemental Discharge (SAED), you can only do so after Amped Element Discharge (AED), Amped Element Discharge (AED) Follow-up, or after guarding. Be aware that, unlike previous titles, you cannot transition into it from moves like Shield Thrust.

Power Clash Occur During Guarding

How To Do Power Clash
Hold
During Power Clash Repeatedly

When you Guard against certain monster attacks, a new feature called 'Power Clash' is triggered. Winning a 'Power Clash' creates an opportunity to land powerful moves like 'Amped Element Discharge' on the monster. Make sure to win the clash and follow up with a counterattack.

Use Guard Points (GP) Effectively

In Charge Blade, there are certain actions that have a Guard Point (GP) mechanic in addition to the standard Guard. Actions with GP will glow white during the GP detection, making them easier to identify. However, mastering these during hunts is a challenge for advanced players. Once you're comfortable with Charge Blade controls, try incorporating them into your gameplay.
