In Monster Hunter Wilds, Focus Mode can be done by pressing and holding L2 and a specific button. For all weapons in general, L2 can be used for a Focus Strike, but for the Great Sword, long press L2 + △ for an Overhead Slash.

Focus Mode When Aiming with Long-Range Weapons

Long-range weapons such as the Bow, Light Bowgun, and Heavy Bowgun goes in Focus Mode when they are aimed.

1Aim and fire attacks, and guard in the direction in front of the camera
2Weak points and wounds of monsters are highlighted. Special attacks can be done to these spots

What is Focus Mode?

Ability to Easily Attack/Guard Against Monsters

Focus Mode is a new combat feature found in Monster Hunter Wilds that will allow you to aim your guard and attack against monsters. While in Focus Mode, the player will be in an aimed state for an attack or guard, which if successful will activate a strong special attack.

Deals Special Attacks & Moves

When in Aim Mode, you are able to change stances and deal special moves.

Camera Zooms In, Making it Easier To Gauge Distance

When using Focus Mode, the camera takes a closer dynamic perspective than before, making it easier to get a sense of distance between you and the monster. This system can help beginners and new players to the game.

Attacks & Guards are Performed Directly in Front of the Camera

Attack and guards while in Focus Mode will directly happen in front of the camera. It is expected that camera movement will be more important than ever.

Focus Mode Features & Advantages

Wounds are Highlighted in Focus Mode

In Focus Mode, the wounds you created on the monster will be highlighted in red. Successfully attacking wounded parts can activate a special move.

Exposed Weaknesses are Also Highlighted

Exposed weak points are also highlighted during Focus Mode. In the video, when the Chatacabra's tongue is exposed, it is shown as a weak point. However, some monsters may not have any exposed weak points in the first place.

Deal Strong Special Moves when in Focus Mode

In Monster Hunter Wilds, wounds are created by repatedly attacking the same body part of a monster. By pressing R1 button while in Focus Mode, you can do a special move called Focus Strike that deals heavy damage.

Focus Strikes Only Happen When Hitting Wounds/Weak Points While In Focus Mode

Since Focus Strikes is activated by hitting weak points or wounds while in Focus Mode, unconventional combos can be done.

Wounds can be Destroyed

It appears that repeated attacks on wounds can destroy them and create further oppotunities. However, it is unclear exactly what state the destruction of a wound refers to.

No Stamina Consumption During Focus Mode

Unlike actions such as dashing, there is no stamina consumption while in Focus Mode. This means that you can fully concentrate on monsters without distraction.
