Rey Dau Strategy Tips

1.▼Aim for a Knockdown After Thunder Attack
2.▼Counter Thunderblight
3.▼Use a Flash Pod Mid-flight to Knockdown
4.▼Utilize Environmental Traps
5.▼The Ground in Area 17 will Explode When Attacked
6.▼Hitting a Grounding Pod During Charge Causes Stagger

Aim for a Knockdown After Thunder Attack

After Rey Dau does a Thunder-based attack, you can knock it down by using Focus Strike when its horns glow red. Since you can knock it down again, be sure to close in after a Thunder attack. However, out of all Thunder attacks, only the one performed twice in a row does not cause a knockdown.

Counter Thunderblight

Getting hit by Rey Dau’s Thunder-element attack will inflict Thunderblight. While affected by Thunderblight, you become more susceptible to Stun when hit by monster attacks. Keep evading or use a Nulberry to remove Thunderblight.

Use a Flash Pod Mid-flight to Knockdown

Using a Flash Pod while Rey Dau is airborne will cause it to fall. When it falls, it enters a staggered state, allowing us to deal free hits for a few seconds. Be sure to use Flash Pods when it’s flying.

Flash Pods will not be Effective on Fifth Time

Flash Pod knockdowns are only effective up to the fourth time. After that, Rey Dau will momentarily stop moving but won’t fall anymore.

Utilize Environmental Traps in Area 17

Rey Dau tends to visit more at Area 17, which contains an environmental trap called Falling Boulder. Dropping it on Rey Dau deals massive damage. Use a Ghillie Mantle to stealthily approach and pull the Falling Boulder down with your Slinger.

Deal Damge with Falling Boulder at Area 5

If you start in Area 5, there are multiple Falling Boulder points, so use them to deal damage.

The Ground in Area 17 will Explode When Attacked

In Area 17, the ground hit by Rey Dau’s attack will explode. When fighting here, don’t just evade the attacks, but make sure to move out of the explosion’s range.

Use a Dung Pod to Relocate

Hitting a monster with a Dung Pod will force it to move to another area. Since Area 17 gives Rey Dau an advantage, using a Dung Pod drives it away.

Hitting a Grounding Pod During Charge Causes Stagger

When Rey Dau is charged with electricity, hitting it with a Grounding Pod will cause it to stagger. If you’re in a tough spot and about to be hit by an attack, use a Grounding Pod to stagger it and cancel the attacks.

Grounding Pods Can Be Found in Area 17

Monster Hunter Wilds - Grounding Pod Locations
You can obtain Grounding Pods by picking up “Charged Thunder Stones” in Windward Plains’ Area 17.

How to Fight Rey Dau

1▼ Use Electricity as Telegraphs
2▼ Evade Left or Right Against Aerial Wing Drag
3▼ Evade Towards Rey Dau During Wing Drag
4▼ Anticipate the Wing Smash
5▼ Beware of the Horn Thrust
6▼ Watch for Tail Whips
7▼ Wing Smash Combo

Use Electricity as Telegraphs

Rey Dau has multiple Thunder-based attacks. You can distinguish them by watching which part of the Rey Dau is charged with electricity, so choose your reaction carefully. The following Thunder attacks occur both on the ground and in the air, but their telegraphs remain the same.

Wide Attack When Neck is Charged

When the crystals on either side of Rey Dau's neck crackles with electricity, it is preparing for a wide-range thunder explosion. Furthermore, the surrounding area will darken slightly when it is about to fire this attack. Compared to other attacks, this one is particularly powerful, so take extra caution.

2 Attacks When Horns are Charged

If only Rey Dau's horns are charged then Rey Dau will release two consecutive Thunder attacks. Make sure to dodge both hits before proceeding with your own attack. Since this attack is slow, you can avoid it by simply walking left or right.

Single Attack When Spines are Charged

When electricity arcs from the spines of Rey Dau's back to its horns, a single Thunder attack with a long range will follow. Simply move to either side to avoid this attack.

Evade Left or Right Against Aerial Wing Drag

Rey Dau uses an aerial attack where it drags its wings across the ground in a straight line. This attack is telegraphed by Rey Dau creating some distance, and can easily be avoided by evading in either direction.

Evade Towards Rey Dau During Wing Drag

Rey Dau has a grounded variant of its wing drag attack with a more diagonal hitbox. This attack is slower compared to its aerial variant and can be avoided by dodging underneath Rey Dau. Since Rey Dau remains stationary during this attack, you can use it as an attack window.

Anticipate the Wing Smash

After Rey Dau flips in the air, it will perform a wing smash into the ground. Run left, right, or evade to avoid. Dodging this attack creates an attack window before Rey Dau can pull its wing out of the ground.

Beware of the Horn Thrust

When fighting at close range, Rey Dau can point its horns forward and perform a thrusting attack. Once you identify this attack, you can avoid it by moving backward.

Watch for Tail Whips

When fighting behind Rey Dau, be cautious of its tail attacks. Even if you're standing in front, you can still get hit if it's a spinning attack. Be prepared to avoid it even if it's target an ally behind you.

Hovering Smash Combo

Rey Dau will occasionally perform an aerial 2-hit discharge before flipping into a wing smash. Even if you avoid the initial 2-hit attack, be prepared to evade the wing smash finisher for this attack.
