Rathian Strategy Tips

1▼ Bring Antidotes to Prevent Poisoning
2▼ Prioritize Tail Severing
3▼ Utilize Flash Pods
4▼ Focus Strike When the Mouth Glows During the Roar

Bring Antidotes to Prevent Poisoning

Getting hit by a Rathian's somersault attack will inflict Poison on the Hunter. Bring Antidotes to cure poison whenever you get hit by this attack.

Prioritize Tail Severing

By severing a Rathian's tail, you can narrow down the attack range of many of it's tail-related attacks (including the somersault attack), so prioritize severing her tail to make the entire fight easier.

Severing the Tail Removes the Poison Effect

After severing the tail, you will no longer be poisoned by tail attacks.

Utilize Flash Pods

Like its male counterpart, the Rathalos, a Rathian spends a significant amount of time fighting in the air. Utilize Flash Pods proactively to ground a Rathian and open her up to follow-up attacks.

Focus Strike When the Mouth Glows During the Roar

Rathian’s mouth glows red during its deviation, creating an opportunity for a Focus Strike to knock it down. Since this doesn’t happen every time, staying in Focus Mode and watching for it is a good strategy.

How to Fight Rathian

1Breath Attack Opening
2Evade Somersault Attack Sideways
3Watch for Tail Swipes
4Be Wary of Consecutive Dashes

Breath Attack Opening

A Rathian's breath attack is telegraphed by raising her head and gathering fire in her mouth. This animation can be used as an attack opportunity via a quick evasion and attacks to the side of her head.

Evade Somersault Attack Sideways

A Rathian's somersault attack has a long vertical range and also poisons Hunters that get hit. Make sure to avoid horizontally by moving left or right to completely avoid the attack.

Occasional Consecutive Attacks

Sometimes, a Rathian may use 2 consecutive somersault attacks, so be prepared to avoid a second time. Alternatively, use a Flash Pod to ground a Rathian while it's flying and make it vulnerable to more attacks.

Watch for Tail Swipes

The telegraph for a Rathian's tail swipe is when it turns its head to check behind her. This attack is very fast, but can also be avoided by standing directly under the Rathian.

Be Wary of Consecutive Dashes

A Rathian can perform consecutive dash attacks that aggressively target the hunter. A dashing Rathian does not change direction mid-dash, so make sure to avoid the initial direction before preparing to avoid the next dash.
