Gypceros Strategy Tips
How to Fight Gypceros
Counter Flash with Focus Strikes, Guards, or Evades
Gypceros will strike the crest of its head two or three times, releasing a violent flash which may leave you stunned. You can counter this by using Focus Strike, breaking the head twice, using Guard, or performing an Emergency Evade.
Interrupt Flash Using Focus Strike
A Gypceros telegraphs a flash attack by standing still and shaking its head three times. This normal flash
can be interrupted with a Focus Strike, but note that the Gypceros also has another variation of flash attack that involves jumping up and down which cannot be interrupted.
Recover from Stun Using Left Joystick
Being hit by a Flash will leave you stunned for 3 seconds, and Gypceros will then follow up with a Tail attack. Recover quickly by moving your left joystick to trigger Evade before it connects with its follow-up attacks.
Evade Poison Spit
Gypceros can sometimes launch a poison spit at you. You can easily dodge the attacks by keeping a constant left-to-right movement, even under repeated fire. Make sure to stay alert and avoid being hit.
Dodge Left and Right
Gypceros' signature move involves running around while spewing poison. To evade this attack, move left and right more widely than you would for other monsters' Dash Attacks. It may also run around three times in a row or perform a single tail attack, so observe it from a distance to figure out which pattern to expect.
Watch for a Follow-Up Tail Slam
Gypceros has a trick up its sleeve after a Dash Attack involving a series of wind up motions that leads straight into a Tail Attack so be patient as rushing in carelessly can leave you vulnerable to its tail. If you plan to chase Gypceros after a Dash Attack, be wary of this sudden tail attack.
Anticipate the Tail's Long Reach
Its characteristically flexible tail is stretched out in a straight line and slammed down on you, making it more dangerous than it looks since it has a much longer reach when attacking. This attack stretches far but not wide. The hitbox is narrow, so stay calm and dodge horizontally.
Beware of the Tail Rotation at Close Range
In addition to extending its tail, the Gypceros can also use an attack in which the tail is flailed around multiple times. Beware this attack when fighting close-range or attacking its feet.
Utilize the Fake Death Opportunity
Gypceros may suddenly collapse on the spot and play dead
. It's easy to distinguish since its still convulsing and the quest hasn't been signified as completed. This is your chance to attack or carve, so don't miss it.
Be Wary of Rising Attacks
Whenever the Gypceros plays dead, it always uses a rising attack
when it decides to wake up. This attack hits in a small area all around the Gypceros, so back off after carving or landing a few attacks.
10 Second Down Time
Once a Gypceros begins to play dead, you have approximately 10-13 seconds before it uses a rising attack. Quickly decide whether to carve, attack, or set up traps and bombs. Just make sure to act quickly and use this opening however you see fit.
