Once you reach the Oilwell Basin, upgrade your previous lace to a Quematrice Lanza II. This Lance has a better Guard skill, and is easy to craft since all it needs is some ore from Oilwell Basin. This Lance can even be used for some hunts in Chapter 3.

During the earlier stages of Monster Hunter Wilds, equipping 4 pieces of the Doshaguma armor set is recommended for its Set Bonus, Doshaguma's Might II. Doshaguma's Might II is a skill that increases attacks after a power clash, which is easy to do with a guarding weapon such as the Lance. The final piece of the armor can be anything you choose!
Ajarakan Off-Piece
Ajarakan's Head, Torso, and Leg armors grant points of the Partbreaker skill, which increases the damage of focus strikes. You could even mix and match with 2 pieces of Doshaguma and 3 pieces of Ajarakan to acquire Powerhouse I and Partbreaker III respectively.
Equip Hope Charm if Available
The Hope Charm that you receive as an early bonus increases both Attack and Defense, making it a very good early game choice. If you happen to have this talisman, make sure to equip it.
