Earn And Redeem Points

Redeem Points

In exchange for catching bugs, Flick will reward you with points which you can spend to buy bug-related items! It seems that if you catch over 3 bugs, you'll get a bonus!

How To Earn Bug Off Points Effectively

4 Ways To Prepare

  • Check which bugs appear that month
  • Plant flowers around the plaza
  • Prepare Tree Trunks & Rotten Turnips
  • Invite other players & get bonus points

Check That Month's Bug Selection

august

Before taking on the Bug Off, it's important to learn which bugs appear in whatever month you're currently in. In August, cicadas and butterflies appear, so you'll want to plant many flowers and trees to get them to spawn.

Check All Bugs That Appear In August Here

Plant Many Flowers Around The Plaza

flower

Bugs such as butterflies and mantises spawn on top of flowers. By planting many flowers around the plaza, you can catch many bugs right after the Bug Off starts.

Butterflies Are Easiest To Catch

Unlike other insects, butterflies don't disappear if you approach them by running. Focus on catching butterflies to earn points fast.

Prepare Tree Trunks & Rotten Turnips

bugs

Besides tree and flowers, bugs also spawn on tree trunks and rotten turnips. Place them before the Bug Off starts to increase your chances of catching more bugs.

Rally Flower Area & Tree Trunk Area Back & Forth

rally
▲With this method, you can catch 16 insects in 3 minutes

After you've planted enough flowers around the plaza and placed enough tree trunks, start the Bug Off. By running back and forth between the area with flowers and area with tree trunks, bugs will respawn, allowing you to catch tons!

Ignore Fast Moving Bugs

Dragonflies and grasshoppers are hard to catch due to their incredible speed. Try ignoring them and focus on catching other insects.

Invite Other Players & Get Bonus Points

▲Flick will give you bonus points for bugs caught by other players

Invite other players to your island during the Bug Off and participate in the event together. Flick will give you a bonus point each time the total number of bugs all players caught exceeds a certain amount. You can earn a max of 10 bonus points.

Number Of Bugs All Players Caught & Bonus Points

Number Of Bugs All Players CaughtBonus Points
5 ~ 9 bugs5 points
9 ~ 14 bugs7 points
15 or more bugs10 points

If You Caught More Than 3 Bugs, You Get A Bigger Bonus

In addition to the bonus points mentioned above, if you contributed to your team by catching more than 3 bugs, you get 2 extra bonus points.

You Can Carry Over Your Points

9 points

Note that the points you've earned can be carried over to spend on next Bug Off if you didn't use them all up. If you couldn't reach 10 points and get a prize, simply save them up and earn more points on the next Bug Off.

LMAO do you talk to your villagers? Because mine never shut up about it for at least a week in advance. Plus it's on the noticeboard. You get loads of notice in-game.

Pretty sure Isabelle mentioned the bug off earlier in the month, and it's on the town notice board a week in advance.

Anonymous 16

I only found out it existed when I logged in at 7pm to find Flick (only his second time on my island since I bought the game), telling me "the June bug-off is over"... and I'm like the what is over?? And you can't even sell bugs to him. -_-

Anonymous 15

They should really tell you the day before in game. I would never in a million years have known I had to log in in the morning only today for this without looking it up online. Forcing you to research every possible before it happens to take part? Kind of messed up.

Pro tip: set out spoiled turnips in a few places. They spawn ants at a near 100% rate, and sometimes flies, too. Easiest way to get points. My best score was either 15 or 17 bugs caught using this strategy.
