How To Gather Rock Materials Efficiently
2 Main Methods
Main Island | Pros ・A max of 6 rocks can spawn Cons ・You have to repeatedly change the in-game date |
---|---|
Other Islands | Pros ・At least 3 rocks will spawn ・Good opportunity to gather other materials as well Cons ・You have to spend Miles every time you go |
Gathering On Your Island
Don't Destroys Rocks + Change The Date
Step | What To Do |
---|---|
1 | Make sure you have 6 rocks on your island |
2 | Collect all the materials available by hitting rocks without breaking them! |
3 | Advance the time (Switch System Time) |
4 | Repeat steps 2-3 over and over |
In New Horizons, rocks will only respawn at a rate of 1 rock per day! Additionally, their spawn location will change. It's therefore better to leave your original 6 rocks unbroken, hit them repeatedly, & change your game's date) to collect once again.
Gathering On Other Islands
Keep Breaking 3 Rocks Over And Over
Step | What To Do |
---|---|
1 | Get a Nook Miles Ticket |
2 | Travel to another island on a Mystery Island Tour |
3 | Hit 3 rocks until you break them |
4 | Return home from the tour |
5 | Repeat steps 1-4 over and over |
This gathering method utilizes the fact that 3 rocks will always spawn on other islands you visit via a Mystery Island Tour. However, this method is particularly tough on the wallet, as it will cost you 2000 miles per trip! If you decide to go, make sure you gather other resources as well to make it worth your while.

Clear Items Around The Rock
Materials will not spawn from beating rocks if there are other items lying on the ground in the surrounding cells! Make sure that at least one of the 9 possible tiles is free before hitting the rock.
Dig Two Holes Behind Yourself
Every time you hit a rock, you'll slide back a little bit due to recoil. If you keep doing this, by the time you get to your 3rd or 4th hit, you'll be too far from the rock and miss. To be safe, dig 2 tiles worth of holes behind you in the pattern outlined above. Doing so will allow you to get the 8 maximum hits off on the rock.
