Do Rocks Respawn? - Time & Rules

General Information About Rocks

  • Only 1 rock respawns every day
  • They can be hit with a Shovel or Axe
  • If you hit them after eating a fruit, you can destroy them
  • Can be hit a maximum of 8 times
  • If there are too many items on the floor around the rock, materials will not spawn in that occupied tile!

How To Gather Rock Materials Efficiently

2 Main Methods

Main IslandPros
・A max of 6 rocks can spawn
Cons
・You have to repeatedly change the in-game date
Other IslandsPros
・At least 3 rocks will spawn
・Good opportunity to gather other materials as well
Cons
・You have to spend Miles every time you go

Gathering On Your Island

Don't Destroys Rocks + Change The Date

StepWhat To Do
1Make sure you have 6 rocks on your island
2Collect all the materials available by hitting rocks without breaking them!
3Advance the time (Switch System Time)
4Repeat steps 2-3 over and over

In New Horizons, rocks will only respawn at a rate of 1 rock per day! Additionally, their spawn location will change. It's therefore better to leave your original 6 rocks unbroken, hit them repeatedly, & change your game's date) to collect once again.

Gathering On Other Islands

Keep Breaking 3 Rocks Over And Over

StepWhat To Do
1Get a Nook Miles Ticket
2Travel to another island on a Mystery Island Tour
3Hit 3 rocks until you break them
4Return home from the tour
5Repeat steps 1-4 over and over

This gathering method utilizes the fact that 3 rocks will always spawn on other islands you visit via a Mystery Island Tour. However, this method is particularly tough on the wallet, as it will cost you 2000 miles per trip! If you decide to go, make sure you gather other resources as well to make it worth your while.

Rock Material Gathering Tips

Clear Items Around The Rock

Clear Items

Materials will not spawn from beating rocks if there are other items lying on the ground in the surrounding cells! Make sure that at least one of the 9 possible tiles is free before hitting the rock.

Dig Two Holes Behind Yourself

Holes

Every time you hit a rock, you'll slide back a little bit due to recoil. If you keep doing this, by the time you get to your 3rd or 4th hit, you'll be too far from the rock and miss. To be safe, dig 2 tiles worth of holes behind you in the pattern outlined above. Doing so will allow you to get the 8 maximum hits off on the rock.

I made a 7x9 area for my rocks and filled my whole island with mannequins but the rock spawned on the path and not the tile I designated for it? Would I have to work around that rock?

Just so you know, you can control the spawn location of rocks after breaking them. They can't spawn on 1 space paths, sand, or stone. They also won't spawn near edges like cliffs and where green is next to sand or water. Fences, weeds, and dropped items can help you corral them where you want.

Our rock didn't regenerate. Is there any hope?
