How To Co Op / Multiplayer

Party Play Procedure Chart

No. Procedure
1 Have 2 or more accounts on same island

2 Open Nook Phone & select "Call Islander"
3 Press L and R To register Joy-Cons
4 Call Islander is completed when all Joy-Cons are synchronized

1. Have 2 Or More Accounts On 1 Island

To be able to play local co op or Party Play, you'll need to have 2 or more accounts on the same console (Switch). You can have up to 4 accounts playing at the same time!

2. Use Call Island App On Nook Phone

Use Call Island App On Nook Phone

To initiate local co-op Party Play, open your Nook Phone and press the Call Islander app.

Choose Accounts To Play With

Choose Accounts To Play With

Once selected, the app will prompt you to choose which accounts you want to play with on the island. You can have up to 3 people to play with you.

3. Press L & R To Synchronize

Once you've chosen accounts to play with, make sure to synchronize your Joy-Cons. This can be done by press the L & R buttons simultaneously.

Make Sure To Pair Joy-Cons

If you're using Joy-Cons that have not been paired with the Switch yet, make sure to pair them first before trying to synchronize with the game.

4. Call Islander Is Complete When Synchronized

You'll be able to play with several players when all your Joy-Cons are complete. Enjoy & have fun by playing locally with friends!

What Are Leaders & Followers?

Leader Plays Normally

When you're assigned as the leader during local co op, you can play as you normally can on your island. You'll have an arrow on your head to identify you as the leader.

Game Will Play In Your Point-Of-View

The camera will be in the leader's point-of-view and will follow the leader around, not the followers.

Leaders Can Be Switched

When you have multiple players on local co op, you can switch leaders, allowing other players to lead the game.

Followers Are Supporting Players

 Followers Are Supporting Players

Players who are not leaders will be followers. They can support the leader and when they are off-screen, they will automatically be returned to the leader's side.

Followers Have Limited Control

Followers will not be able to chat, use the Nookphone, or check their pockets. They can, however, use tools or move furniture around to help the leader out.

Co Op / Local Multiplayer - Party Play Features

Local Co Op With Up To 4 Friends

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it will be possible to play locally using a mode called Party Play! This mode allows up to 4 players and requires that all players use one console. This is different from Online/Wireless Multiplayer, so be careful!

Uses Accounts Of Players On Switch

In Party Play, you can choose to use the characters of different accounts on the same Nintendo Switch. This lets you play with the people who live with you on the island!

Use Joy-Cons To Control Players

Use Joy-Cons To Control Players

You can connect a maximum of 4 Joy-Cons onto the Nintendo Switch and use them to control the 4 characters in Party Play or local co op.

Can Swap Leaders During Party Play

Can Swap Leaders During Party Play

When in local co op, one player will be assigned as the leader and the other 3 will be followers. This role can be switched around, letting others have a turn in the game.

Share Resources & Materials

Share Resources & Materials

Bugs and Fish you've caught, Fossils you've dug up, and other things you've picked up can be shared across all players via the use of a Recycle Box in the Resident Services building.
