Although it's random, you can go on a Mystery Island Tour which will sometimes land you on a unique island with a lot of one particular resource, such as a specific Bug, certain large Fish, or a certain plant like Bamboo.

Catch Beetles In The Summer
In the summer season, especially from July-August (or January-February for the southern hemisphere), you can catch a ton of expensive beetles! Several of these range from 6000 to 12000 bells in value, so they're definitely worth hunting. Note that many of them only spawn on Palm Trees.
