Talk to them
Send a letter and get a reply
Give a present
Give them an item they want

Give them garbage or weeds
Hit them with a Net repeatedly

There's No Point In Lowering Friendship Level

There are no benefits of lowering a villager's friendship level. It has no effect on whether or not a villager moves off of your island, so we encourage you not to bully your poor animals. If there's a Villager you don't like, simply have them move away!

How To Efficiently Increase Friendship Level

Talk To Them Every Day

If you want to increase a certain villager's friendship level, make sure to talk to them every day! By simply doing this their friendship level will increase, making this a really easy and efficient method. It is rather slow, however, so if you'd like something faster try the alternatives below.

Wrap Presents

Once you're able to give presents to Villagers, purchase some wrapping paper from Nook's Cranny and use it on your present. This will increase the amount of friendship points the villager gets from receiving a present.

Send A Letter With A Present Attached

You can only give a present to a villager directly once per day. If you want to increase your friendship even more, try sending them presents via the mail!

Do Favors For The Villagers

If one of your villagers needs something or is in trouble, help them out! There are various types of requests you'll get from villagers, so whenever you have the chance make sure to listen to them and help them out, as that will increase your friendship levels with them.

How To Check Friendship Level

Stage 1: Just Talk To Them

When a villager first moves to your island, you won't be able to do anything except talk to them since your friendship level is so low. However, if you talk to them every day this level will go up and you'll eventually advance to the next stage.

Stage 2: Able To Give Them Presents

▲"Let's talk" / "Have this present!" / "Just saying hi"

Once your friendship level reaches Stage 2, you'll be able to give villagers a present once you talk to them. Try to give them something that they love in order to get the maximum friendship level boost.

Stage 3: Get Pictures

At Stage 3, you'll be able to get pictures from the villagers. To get to this level you'll have to give them presents and greet them many, many times, so make sure that doing so is a regular part of your routine.

Get Pictures Of The Villagers

By maxing out friendship level with a villager you'll get a picture of them as a present! This is a sign of the bond between you and that animal, so if there's a villager you are particularly fond of, try to get their picture!

Change How They Speak And Greet You

▲By increasing friendship level, you can get villagers to change how they greet you!

By getting closer to Villagers, you'll be able to change the very way that animal speaks, including the way it greets you. Villagers will propose this idea to you themselves, so once your friendship is high enough just wait until one of them approaches you with the topic. Note that certain phrases you set have a chance of spreading to other villagers too, so be forewarned!
