Add Them With Switch Friend Code
Although it is possible to play online with people you know by giving them your Dodo Code, it's more convenient to add someone to your Switch friend's list if you plan on playing with them regularly. An Internet Connection will be required for this at all times.
Difference Between Local and Online Play

For Local Play, you can either open your gates to everyone or set a friend code for a particular person to join. You won't need to become Switch Friends!
Friends - What Can You Do With?
Open Your Island for Visitors
By opening your island to visitors on online play, your friends will be able to visit you in game. This is suitable for players who would rather play with friends than with strangers.

Chat In-App With Best Friends Only
Players who are Best Friends with each other can chat using the best friends app of Nook Phone if they are online. The chat will be logged in the conversations in the Friends app. Note that you can still talk with visitors to your island via chat bubbles.

Players cannot plant or uproot any Treesor Flower at another player's island unless they are best friends. This ensures that only people you can trust can do these things to your island!
How to Become Best Friends
Download App In The Airport
Invite friends to visit and you will get the option to download the Best Friends app. You will not get this option if you don't have any Nintendo friends.

From the Friends App, you can apply to be best friends with one of your friends. Doing so will let you do all the actions that only best friends can do!
Friends' Island - How To Visit
Head To The Airport
You can open your island for visits or head out to your friends' islands through the airport. Talk to Orville at the airport.
Visit Through Local Play or Online Play
You can then choose between local play and online play to visit your friends. Remember, if you don't have any friends in your Nintendo Switch, no options to go to a friend's island will show up. You can still use a Dodo Code to reach someone's island, however!
