After digging up a fossil, head to the museum and talk to Blathers. He'll assess the fossil and tell you if you've already donated that fossil or if it's a duplicate.

Donate Or Sell Fossils

After assessing the fossil, you can either donate or sell them. Fossils sell for lots of Bells so make sure to bring them to shops, if you're low on cash.
