Spawn Rate Goes Up With Island Rating
If your Island Rating is high (4 or 5 stars), you'll have a higher chance of finding Rare Mushrooms. It might be worth it to up your island's score before going for these rare shrooms.

Rare Mushrooms can only be obtained in the Fall. Just like the other 4 varieties of mushrooms, they are found at the base of trees. However, Rare mushrooms will actually need to be dug up! Look for holes in a 1 tile radius around trees. Note that their spawn rate is very, very low.
Within 1 Tile Of Trees Only
Rare Mushrooms will only be found in holes that are directly next to trees. The appearance of the hole will be exactly the same as the one for fossils. It's not possible to tell what will come out before having away at it with your shovel.
Count Mushrooms While Searching
Holes near trees also have the possibility of containing a fossil. Remember that since a max of 5 mushrooms will spawn on your island every day, if you've already gotten 5 that day, you won't be able to get a Rare Mushroom from a hole. The ideal time to search is when you only find 4 (or fewer) mushrooms on your island.

What Should I Do With Rare Mushrooms?
There is only one DIY recipe you can make using a Rare Mushroom. Once you've gotten that out of the way, you can go ahead and sell Rare Mushrooms, as they go a whopping 16,000 Bells!

Rare mushrooms are a seasonally exclusive Fall item that is used to make DIY recipes. It is one of 5 total varieties of Mushrooms in the game.
Get Recipes From Balloons
Mushroom-series furniture recipes can be obtained from balloon presents during the time when mushrooms are in season. Make sure you pop balloons every time you see one!
