As you progress the game, bridges can be place over water to facilitate fast crossing of rivers. They cost a hefty amount and are differently priced based on their colors and types.

After unlocking island designer, you can landfill the river and connect the land one to another. It takes time to unlock this feature, but it allows you to create an ideal island.
