To get the Golden axe, you need to break 100 axes in your game. When you do, you'll learn the recipe for the Golden axe.

Equip An Axe
Before you can chop down trees, make sure you have an Axe equipped. You can't cut down trees with a Flimsy axe or a Stone axe. It has to be a regular Axe.
Swing Three Times To Chop Down Trees
Swing your Axe 3 times with the A button to make wood drop from the tree and to chop it down. You only need to swing 3 times to chop trees.
Leaves You With Stump
When you've swung your Axe 3 times, you'll be left with a 3 pieces of any type of wood and a tree stump. You can use your shovel to uproot the tree stump and clear the ground of the hole where the tree was.
