You have to have two games, yes you would start over on one of the games if they are on the same system, If you have been passing the game between two systems then you should have two different islands. The only way to play separate is by having two systems with two games. You can open the airport to play local between two systems, bot sure if you’d need another Nintendo account though.

We don't have an internet connection, so we play local. We can play together on the same island but no fun. One of us has to be the leader. Can we play together on the same island but so that we interact separately?
Do we need to buy another console+game?
We have one nintendo account. Do I need yo open a nintendo account too? But in this case, i would have to start from scratch right?
