This guide breaks down how Mahjong works in Neverness to Everness (NTE). It covers the quirks of Mahjong Inferno, how it splits off from traditional Riichi Mahjong, where to sit down and play, the tactics that actually win, and what you get for your trouble. If you're just starting out, this is everything you need to know.

New "Riichi Mahjong" Rule Added in Ver 1.2
Riichi Mahjong Added as a Permanent Mode

The version 1.2 update added a second ruleset: Riichi Mahjong, which sits alongside the original Mahjong Inferno. It's permanent, so you can jump into it whenever you want.
Latest UpdatesRules Follow Traditional Japanese Mahjong

Riichi Mahjong plays close to standard Japanese rules. The round ends the moment someone wins, and you need at least one valid Yaku (win condition) to declare that win. Stack multiple Yaku and your score climbs.
How to Unlock Mahjong
Unlocks at Hunter Level 11

Mahjong opens up once you hit Hunter Level 11. Clear quests and neutralize anomalies to push your Hunter Level up, and the parlor becomes available.
How To Increase Hunter LevelRules of Mahjong Inferno
Mahjong Inferno's Unique Rules at a Glance
- Plays nothing like standard Riichi Mahjong.
- The round keeps going after a win, whether it came off a discard or a self-draw.
- You swap 3 same-suit tiles at the very start.
- You pick a "Void Suit" and dump it as fast as you can.
- Anyone without a Ready Hand at the end pays a stiff penalty.
How It Differs from Traditional Mahjong

| General Rules | Key Differences from Riichi Mahjong - Swap 3 tiles of the same suit at the start. - Pick one suit to discard entirely (your Void Suit). - Keep playing and winning even after a successful win. - Declaring a Kong pays you out on the spot. |
|---|
Mahjong Inferno doesn't play like standard Japanese Mahjong. It's built on Sichuan "Bloody Battle" rules, trimmed down to fit NTE's fast-paced minigame pacing.
The Round Continues After a Win

In Mahjong Inferno, a win by discard or self-draw doesn't stop the round. The winner just draws from the wall, discards a tile, and keeps their Ready Hand intact. That means you can stack win after win until the wall is empty.
| Watch Out! | Since you keep drawing and discarding after a win, there's a real risk of handing someone else their winning tile. |
Your "Wait" Locks After Your First Win

You can win as many times as you like, but your Wait (the exact tile you need) is locked in after your first win. So the smart play is a hand that waits on several different tiles, giving you more ways to keep cashing in.
The 3-Tile Swap

Before play starts, every player picks three tiles of the same suit and passes them to another player, then receives three back in return.
Choosing a "Void Suit"

You have to name one suit (Dots, Bamboo, or Characters) as your "Void Suit". Dump every tile of that suit as fast as you can, because you can't win while a Void Suit tile is still sitting in your hand.
No Ready Hand Means a Heavy Penalty

When the wall runs out and the round ends, anyone who isn't holding a Ready Hand pays a steep penalty to the players who got there.
The "Flower Pig" Penalty
Reach the end of the round still holding Void Suit tiles and you become a "Flower Pig." That forces you to pay a multiplied penalty to every player with a Ready Hand. Clear your Void Suit before the wall dries up, no exceptions.
How to Auto-Farm
We Recommend Auto-Farming with 3 NPCs

If you just want to burn Stamina without actually playing, NTE has a built-in auto-play function. Invite NPCs at Bond Level 2 or higher and you skip matchmaking entirely, letting the game run itself.
Steps to Auto-Farm Mahjong
| Step | Action |
|---|---|

A Warning About Auto-Play Online
You can use Auto functions in online multiplayer. But calling Kong can't be automated, so going fully AFK stalls the timer and irritates real players. If you're farming AFK, keep it to AI matches.
Mahjong Strategy and Recommended Tactics
Lean on Pung and Kong

In standard Mahjong, calling tiles caps your hand's value. Mahjong Inferno flips that. Aggressively calling Pung and Kong to finish your hand fast is a genuinely strong tactic. A Chow (three tiles in sequence) is the third meld type, but with the tile swap and Void Suit pushing you toward a single suit, Pung and Kong are usually the better calls here.
| Tip! | Every Kong you declare pays out instantly, so it's points in the bank on top of the meld. |
What is a Pung?

A Pung is a call you make when you're holding two identical tiles and an opponent discards the third. You grab that discard to instantly complete a Meld (a 3-tile set).
What is a Kong?

A Kong is called when you gather four identical tiles. Even with four tiles, it counts as a single 3-tile Meld for your hand.
| Tip! | Already called a Pung? Draw the 4th matching tile later and you can upgrade it into a Kong. |
Chase a "Full Flush" for Big Points

Between the opening tile swap and the Void Suit rule, a Full Flush (a hand made entirely of one suit) is well worth aiming for. You're already funneled toward a single suit, so those huge scores are very reachable.
Build Multi-Wait Hands

Since you can win over and over in one round, aim for a hand that waits on as many tiles as possible. The UI helps here: once you reach a Ready Hand, it shows exactly which tiles you need and how many are left.
Mahjong Scoring Rules
Scoring at a Glance
- - Everyone starts with 10,000 Pt, reset at the start of each round.
- - Declaring a Kong pays out immediately.
- - Your final multiplier comes from multiplying all your completed scoring patterns together.
Starting Points Reset Every Round

Every match starts you at 10,000 Pt and resets each round, so there's no long-term point deficit to worry about.
Kong Pays Out Instantly

Declaring a Revealed or Concealed Kong siphons points off the other players right away. You can rack up points from Kongs long before you ever complete a winning hand.
The Multiplier Stacks Fast
In Mahjong Inferno, your overall multiplier comes from multiplying the value of every scoring pattern you complete. Pile on conditions and the total snowballs into a massive payout.
Benefits of Playing Mahjong
Earn Rank-Based Rewards

Playing Mahjong hands you "Chirpy Sparrow Balls," a currency tied to your final placement. Talk to Kureha in the parlor to spend them on a dedicated shop full of Mahjong Skins and visual Effects.
| Bonus Info | On top of base rank rewards, your surplus points convert into bonus Chirpy Sparrow Balls. The formula is (Final Points - 10,000) x 10. |
Trade City Stamina for Fons
Once a round wraps, you can trade City Stamina for Fons based on your placement. The payout scales with your Tycoon Level, so leveling that up makes every session more lucrative.
| Note! | Stamina cost scales with your rank: 25 for 1st, 20 for 2nd, 15 for 3rd, and 10 for 4th. |
Shinku's Life Skill Is a Perfect Fit

Shinku's "Competitive" Life Skill raises the Stamina cost per match but boosts the rewards you get back even more. If you need to torch City Stamina in a hurry, this is the most efficient way to do it.
Shinku Build: Best Arcs & TeamHow to Use Mahjong Skins | How to Change Effects
Skins Need Manual Activation

Buying a Skin or Effect doesn't equip it automatically. You apply it yourself, either from the pre-game lobby (at a Mahjong Table) or straight from your inventory bag.
Changing Skins at a Mahjong Table
- Select "Outfit" at the table
- Equip the new skin or effect

Walk up to an open table and hit the "Outfit" button instead of sitting down.

That opens your collection. Tick the box next to the Skin you want and hit "Save" to apply it.
Changing Skins from Your Bag
- Open your Bag.
- Find the item in the "Important Items" tab.
- Hit "Use" to open the Outfit screen.

Once a new tile Skin or Effect is in your inventory, open your bag using the icon at the top left of the screen.

Head to the "Important Items" tab, find the Skin, and press "Use."
The button says "Use," but Mahjong Skins are permanent cosmetic unlocks. You won't burn them.

Pressing "Use" opens the Outfit menu. Pick the Skin or Effect you want and hit "Save."
Where Can You Play Mahjong?
Head to Little Sparrow in the Miguel District

Mahjong runs exclusively inside the "Little Sparrow" Maid Cafe in the Miguel District. Head in, go up to a Mahjong Table on the second floor, and interact with it to start. Certain tables are set aside specifically for Riichi Mahjong.
Look for the Maid Outfit Map Icon

Little Sparrow shows up on your world map as a Maid Outfit icon. Can't spot it? Set a waypoint through your Menu: City Tycoon > Hethereau Hobbies > Little Sparrow.
Online and CPU Matches

You can matchmake online against real players or run private CPU matches against the game's characters. CPU matches are ideal when you're still learning the ropes.
Bond Level 2 Is Required to Invite Characters

To invite a specific character (CPU) to your table, you first need their Bond Level at 2, which you can reach quickly by giving gifts.
