Trick Room User That Packs A Punch

The main draw of Hatterene is its extremely low speed and high Sp. Atk (136). Once you get Trick Room off, you should be able to fire back at your opponent and deal massive damage. Unlike many other Trick Room users, Hatterene doesn't need to rely on other Pokemon to deal damage.

Reliably Set Up Trick Room

Magic Bounce will let you reflect the status changing moves of your opponents. This means that you can freely set up without worrying about Taunt. Also, since many tanks will use Will-o-Wisp and Toxic, Hatterene's Ability deals well with them as well.

Spec For Survivability

This build's main priority is getting Trick Room off, so you'll need to ensure that you can survive long enough to do so. The EV spread presented here gives you just enough Defense to survive an Iron Head from Excadrill. The remainder should be placed in Sp. Attack.

Go For A Super Effective Move Reducing Berry

Hatterene's weaknesses are Ghost, Poison, and Steel. If you're worried about Excadrill or Durant, use a Babiri Berry. For Mimikyu and Dragapult, use a Kasib Berry.

Worth Dynamaxing Too

Hatterene's incredible Sp. Atk makes it well suited to Dynamaxing as well. With Max Mindstorm and Max Starfall you can disable priority moves and status changes respectively. This can be beneficial for your follow-up Pokemon as well.

How To Play Against Hatterene

Use Powerful Supereffective Moves

Since Hatterene's speed is so low, you'll almost certainly be able to get the first hit off. Take it out with a high-power Steel move from the get-go! After Trick Room goes off, you might have trouble so consider Dynamaxing to take it out right away.

Keep Trick Room In Mind During Selection

In all likelihood, you may not be able to prevent Hatterene from getting off Trick Room. Rather than worry too much about Hatterene, try to anticipate which Pokemon on its team will be the ace/sweeper and deal with them instead.

Use Trick Room To Your Advantage

If you say Hatterene on the opponent's team, chances are high it will be a Trick Room user. One possible option is to bring out your own slow Pokemon and use them after Trick Room activates. However, since your opponent's team is likely even slower, this might not always work.
