|Best EV Spread|
|Defense 252, HP 252, Sp. Def 4|
Toxapex is a classic defensive wall that can frustrate opponents with Regenerator and Recover. Instead of Baneful Bunker, Toxic Spikes or Toxic are also a very good choice. The move Haze removes all stat changes, so it can be really good at canceling out an opponent's set up (such as Mimikyu).
Go For A Burn With Scald
Toxapex's access to the move Scald allows it to possibly burn its target. This is a good way to shut down an offensive threat, as it will reduce their attack by half.
Recover, Scald, and Haze Are A Must
We strongly recommend running the above mentioned 3 moves, as they are the most advantageous in most situations. Your fourth move can be left up to your discretion. We've recommended Baneful Bunker for the utility, but in actuality Toxic may be a better option for your team composition. Toxic is better for taking down tanks, while Baneful Bunker is better for walling physical attackers.
Toxapex - Recommended Moveset
Physical Tank Build
|Liquidation||Physical water-type move, can lower defense. Useful to have as a STAB move.|
|Scald||Special water-type move, can cause a burn. Useful to have as a STAB move.|
|Poison Jab||Physical poison-type move, can inflict poison. Useful to have, but not necessary, as Toxic and Recover stalling will usually do the trick.|
|Ice Beam||Special ice-type move, good to have for type coverage if you're lacking it on your team.|
Other Viable Moves
|Baneful Bunker||Works just like Protect, but if your opponent hits you with a move, they also become poisoned. Extremely useful defensive tool to scare away most threats.|
|Recover||Restores half of your health. Must have move.|
|Haze||Removes all stat changes on the field. Useful for stopping set up sweepers.|
|Toxic Spikes||The opposing Pokemon become poisoned when they enter the battlefield.|
|Toxic||Poisons the target severely, causing increasing damage each turn. Useful to have against tanky threats who Toxapex can't take out with regular moves.|
Toxapex - Recommended Items to Hold
|Black Sludge||Restores health at the end of every turn. Good stall move alongside Recover.|
Recommended Pokemon To Counter Toxapex
- Can use Knock Off to remove Black Sludge
- Drum Beating is not a contact move
- Resists Scald
- Knock Off is a contact move, could get poisoned
- Can two shot with Earthquake
- Immune to Poison
- Can learn Rapid Spin to clear hazards
-Weak to Water-type moves
- Can two shot with Thunderbolt or Thunder (w/ Choice Specs)
- Susceptible to Toxic
- Can two shot with Discharge (w/ Choice Specs)
- Immune to Poison/Toxic
- Could be burned by Scald
How To Play Against Toxapex
Switching into a Steel type to avoid Toxic Spikes and rapid spinning is a good idea if there are hazards. If not, simply bring a Pokemon that can safely do at least 60% of its HP in one turn. Otherwise, it will keep recovering.
Don't Use Contact Moves
Baneful Bunker will cause a Pokemon that attacks it with a contact move to become poisoned. As such, you should be aware of whether or not your moves are contact or not.
Use Special Attacks
It seems that many builds currently played online are investing EVs into Defense, so Special Attacks are preferable.
Knock Off The Black Sludge
The move Knock Off will cut off one source of Toxapex's regeneration, so it comes highly recommended.
Toxapex - Base Points (EVs) and Natures
Recommended Base Point (EV) Allocation
|Defense||252 points (max)|
|HP||252 points (max)|

This EV spread will guarantee favorable matchups vs major physical threats like Mimikyu.
Specially Defensive Variant
|HP||252 points (max)|
|Special Defense||252 points (max)|
This version simply puts EVs in Sp. Def. It might be worth running a Calm nature here too.Check Out The EV (Base Point) Guide Here!
Toxapex - Recommended Natures
|Bold||Def↑ / Atk↓|
Works well to wall physical threat like Mimikyu and Gyarados.
