In the early game, bows are recommended. You can attack safely from a long distance, and it does not attract the enemies attention while your Pals are attacking. The stronger crossbow also uses arrows, so if you can unlock it at Lvl 13 it will make battles easier.

Element Bows Are Also Recommended

The Fire Bow is strong against Grass and Ice Element enemies. Both Fire and Poison bows can inflict additional damage to your enemies, but gathering materials for the arrows might be a little hard. It is recommended to use when defeating Bosses and strong enemies.

The spear not only can attack at a longer range, but if you crouch right after attacking, you can cancel the player's movement. This lets you attack a little faster while saving your ammo.
