Velkhana Overview
The Velkhana is a new Elder Dragon in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. It does powerful ice-based attacks with its breath or tail and protects itself in a tough ice armor.
Velkhana Has Power To Manipulate Ice
The Velkhana has a unique way of manipulating ice. It covers itself in frost armor, being more deadly in this form. It also summons ice breaths, stalactites, and can deal stabbing damage with its sharp tail
Preparing For Velkhana
Bring Ice Resistant Armor
To counter the Iceblight that the Velkhana can inflict on you, it's best to bring Ice Resistant armor and the Iceproof Mantle. This can possibly negate the blight and protect you from running out of stamina in the fight.
Use Fire Weapons Against Velkhana
The Velkhana is more prone to damage from Fire elemental weapons. When facing this Elder Dragon, be sure to have your most powerful fire weapons at your disposal.
Eat Nulberries To Lose Iceblight
If you're hit by Velkhana's ice breath or attacks, you'll be inflicted with Iceblight. Make sure to eat a Nulberry to remove this status effect and avoid loosing too much stamina from the blight.
Use Environmental Traps To Deal Big Damage
The Velkhana can be hurt by environmental traps such as the boulders in Elder's Recess. Make sure to activate these to topple the monster and give yourselves openings for attacks.
Flinch Shot To Topple Velkhana
The Velkhana can be toppled when you use your Slinger Burst or Flinch Shot on its face and it slams into a wall. Make sure to grab Slinger Ammo and keep hitting it with the Slinger Burst to create more attack openings.
Breaking Ice Armor Will Also Topple Monster
The Velkhana can also be topped if you're able to break all the ice surrounding its body. When you do, it'll get stunned and fall over, giving you time to land a few powerful attack combos.
Velkhana - Weakness & Effective Damage Type
The Velkhana's weak points are its head, wings, and tail. Both head and wings can be broken while the tail can be cut off.

Velkhana - Moves & Counters
Moves | Description |
---|---|
Rush Forward | Velkhana will rush forward and try to run you over. Dodge horizontally away from its trajectory to keep from taking damage. |
Frost Breath | Velkhana fires its frost breath in different patterns: straight forward or sweeping around the field. Move to the side of the monster's body to avoid getting hit. |
Ground Ice Breath | Velkhana breathes ice directly below its head and summons pillars of ice that erupt in a circle. This gets wider when Velkhana is enraged. Follow the pattern to know where the ice pillars will erupt. |
Tail Stab | Monster will stab you twice with its tail. It also does a more powerful stab with delayed heavy damage. Watch the tail and dodge when it strikes you. |
Aerial Tail Swipe | While mid-air, Velkhana swings its tail around, hitting nearby hunters in its hitbox. |
Summons Ice Crystals | Rears up and breaths ice into the air, summoning ice crystals to fall around it. Watch the ground to see the range of where the stalactites will fall. |
Extremely Powerful When In Ice Armor
When the Velkhana is covered in its ice armor, it will have more power to manipulate the ice around it. Hunters can shave away its ice armor to lessen its damage and find a way to defeat it.
Forms Ice Pillars With Frost Breath
The Velkhana uses its frost breath to attack you and when it comes in contact with anything, it will form ice pillars. These can damage you or can be used as stepping stones to land jump attacks on the monster.
Check Ground To See Range Of Ice Pillars
When the Velkhana breathes ice into the ground to summon ice pillars, check where the frost is going. This is where the ice pillars will erupt, giving you an idea where and when to dodge.
Watch Out For The Tail
Velkhana often attacks with its tail, using continuous strikes to damage would-be attackers. Dodging once does not ensure safety from these attacks, so makes sure to keep distance when it prepares to attack with its tail.
