How To Steal And Register Ships In Space
Procedure

Disable the engines of the ship using targeting mode.

Dock and board on the targeted ship.

Defeat all the enemies on the ship.
4
Sit in the Pilot Seat.
5
Press TAB and access the SHIP menu.

Select the stolen ship and click Make Home Ship on the right-bottom corner.

Click the Register.
How To Steal And Register Ships On Planets
When scanning planets, if you find a Ship Landing Site icon on a landed ship, it indicates that the ship is stealable.

Approach and board the ship you want.

Defeat all the enemies on the ship.

Sit in the Pilot Seat.

Press TAB and access the SHIP menu.

Select the stolen ship and click Make Home Ship on the right-bottom corner.

Click the Register.
Check The Jump Range When Stealing Ships On Distant Planets
Please check the Grav Drive of the stolen ship to ensure it has enough jump distance to leave the current system, to avoid being trapped.

Frontier
At the beginning of Starfield, you acquire the Frontier, your first ship. While it may not be high-end, it is fully customizable.
Star Eagle
Upon completing the final Freestar Collective mission, The Hammer Falls, you will receive the Star Eagle as a reward. It is an upgraded version of the Frontier with significantly higher cargo capacity.
Complete the Main Mission - Starborn to unlock the Side Mission - Overdesigned to get the Kepler R as a completion reward. It is a well-balanced C-Class ship with a large cargo capacity, ideal for both offense and defense.
