Rathian - Tips & Tricks

Rathian's Fire Breath Has Two Phases

Rathian

Rathian will vary its flame breath attacks based on its state. It will normally shoot a single fireball, but lets loose three fireballs when it's enraged. Keep track of the Rathian's state in order to safely dodge its fire breath!

Prioritize The Head Wings & Tail

The Rathian's weak spots are its head, wings, and tail. Focus on these to deal the most damage to the monster in the least amount of time. Severing the tail will hinder one of the Rathian's deadliest moves!

Antidotes Are A Must-Have In The Hunt

Antidotes Are A Must In The Hunt

Since the Rathian will be able to poison you during the fight. When poisoned, your health will slowly drain, making it harder to fight which is why carrying a ton of antidotes is a big requirement in this hunt!

Use To Flash Pods To Ground The Monster

The Rathian may be difficult to hit when it is airborne since some weapons do not have the reach. However, using the Flash Pod will allow you to ground the monster and get a few good hits in!

Rathian - Moves & Counters

MovesCounter
Rush AttackThe Rathian will rush forward, running over anything in its path. This attack can be sidestepped, or blocked.
Fire BreathFlames will be shot at the hunter. A single fireball is launched at normal state, while 3 successive fireballs are launched when enraged. Dodge diagonally backwards to avoid these.
Tail SwipeThe Rathian swipes its tail around, hitting anything behind it. Dodge forward to avoid the incoming tail.
Flipping Tail AttackRathian will do a somersault and hit whatever is in front of it, with its tail. It has a telegraph which should alert you to dodge to the side.

If you are hit with the Rathian's tail during its flip tail attack, you get the poisoned status effect. This is one of the Rathian's deadliest attacks so make sure to dodge when it winds up for this attack!

Sever The Tail To Lessen The Attack's Range

Sever The Tail To Lessen The Attack

The Rathian's flipping tail attack has a very long range. However, it will have less of a reach once its tail is severed. Make it a priority to sever the tail in order to stop the Rathian from dealing damage at long range.
