The Kirin can only be found and fought in the Coral Highlands locale. It spawns in either Area 8 or 15, then roams around Areas 1-4, 6, 8, 12-13, and 15.
Talk To Biologist To Unlock Low-Rank Kirin Quest
When you've progressed in the story and can explore Astera, locate and talk to the "Smart Biologist". He will give you a series of quests that will ultimately lead to unlocking the low-rank Kirin quest "Gone in a Flash".
Reach HR 49 To Unlock High-Rank Kirin Quest
After clearing the main story and reaching HR 49, you can unlock an optional Kirin quest by finding its tracks in expeditions in the Coral Highlands. Talking to the biologist again in Astera will permanently open this quest to you.

The Kirin only has one weak spot - its head. This makes the monster a very challenging foe as it does many forward charge attacks that can easily down you. Take caution and hit its head when you know it's safe.
