When Does Companion Join The Party?

Torgal
| Join Timing | Joins after "9. Fanning Embers" |

Partner of the main character Clive and joins the party in the early game. Torgal will be in the party for the longest and help the battle most of the time except on special occasions.
Cid
| Join Timing | Joins after "12. Headwind" |
|---|
Dominant of Eikon Ramuh who helps Clive from the critical predicament. However, due to the story, he cannot help Clive second half of the game.
Jill
| Join Timing | Joins after "16. The Hunter and the Hunted" |
|---|
Clive's childhood friend and Dominant to Eikon Shiva. She will have the most time together with Clive if you excluding Torgal. She can be considered the heroine of the story.
Complete Quest To Keep Jill In The Party Outside Of The Main Quest
Completing the quest "Priceless" which will be available in the late game will let Jill join party and follow Clive outside of the main quest.
Joshua
| Join Timing | Joins after "39. Clock and Dagger" |
|---|
The younger brother of the main character Clive and Dominant of Phoenix. He will join party at the late game and stays until the end.
Complete Quest To Keep Joshua In The Party Outside Of The Main Quest
Completing the quest "Where There's a Will" which will be available in the late game will let Joshua join party and follow Clive outside of the main quest.

Can You Choose What Character To Control?
You Cannot Change Your Character From Clive
For the most part, you cannot control other characters in FF16. Also, while the party members are displayed in the bottom right of the screen, their status cannot be seen.
Joshua Can Be Controlled At The Beginning
As one of the early game quests, you will be able to control Joshua. However, you will not be able to control other characters beyond that.
