What Is the Metal Farm in Subnautica 2?

Subnautica 2 Metal Farms

The Metal Farm is a device that creates mineral deposits over time. Place a single piece of raw ore inside, wait for the timer, and harvest the metal with your Sonic Resonator. The ore you placed is not consumed in the process.

It is one of the most important structures in the game, and since Troilite and Atacamite are very rare, this is the only reliable way to get more of them.

How to Unlock the Metal Farm Blueprint

Location Root Canyon
Coordinates: 138770, 401486, -44826

There are multiple broken metal farms scattered around the glowing pool in the area. Scan three of them to unlock the Metal Farm blueprint.

Tip! Do not head here without the Tadpole Depth Module Mk. 1 installed.

How to Get the Crafting Materials

Subnautica 2 Mineralized Clinker, Axum Bacterial Culture, and Atacamite

Troilite, Atacamite, and an Axum Bacterial Culture are needed to craft the Metal Farm. All of these materials can be found in the Root Canyon area.

Material Where to Find It
Troilite
Subnautica 2 Blasting a Mineralized Clinker
Harvested from Mineralized Clinker deposits near the Metal Farm remains. Look for greenish piles on the seafloor with dark square crystals. Mine with the Sonic Resonator. Yields 1 to 3 per node. Very scarce. Collect as much as you can.
Axum Bacterial Culture
Subnautica 2 Getting an Axum Bacterial Culture
Found directly in the yellow glowing pools. Look for a small cage against the glowing background. Break the cage to collect it. There may be as few as five in total. Their only use is for building Metal Farms
Atacamite
Subnautica 2 Getting an Atacamite
Found near the Alien Ruins area, in and around the zone with the Angel Bloom Adaptation and the giant turbine. Dark obsidian-black spiky deposits. Mine with the Sonic Resonator.
Tip! Build a number of Metal Farms before spending Troilite or Axum Bacterial Cultures on anything else. If these run out, you might not be able to craft another Metal Farm.

How to Build a Metal Farm

Subnautica 2 Placing a Metal Farm on a Roof
Metal Farm Recipe
x1 Mangalloy Ingot
x1 Axum Bacterial Culture

After obtaining the Metal Farm blueprint, make sure you have Atacamite, Titanium, and an available Axum Bacterial Culture ready. In the current early‑access build, the number of Axum Bacterial Cultures you can harvest is very limited.

Step What to Do
1
Subnautica 2 Crafting a Mangalloy Ingot Using a Processor
At a Processor, craft a Mangalloy Ingot using x1 Titanium Ingot, x1 Atacamite, and x1 Troilite.
2
Subnautica 2 Cultivation Metal Farm
Equip the Habitat Builder and open the Cultivation tab. Select the Metal Farm.
3
Subnautica 2 Placing a Metal Farm on the Roof
Place the Metal Farm on a solid surface near your base or on the roof.
4
Subnautica 2 Powering Up Metal Farms
Connect it to a power source. Each Metal Farm consumes 20 power. Build Hydroelectric Turbines or Reactors to support it. Use Power Transmitters if the farm is placed further from the base.

How to Use the Metal Farm

Step What to Do
1
Subnautica 2 Metal Farm Opening the Storage
Interact with the Metal Farm to open its storage.
2
Subnautica 2 Metal Farm Selecting Troilite for Farming
Select the material to be farmed and wait until the timer reaches zero.
3
Subnautica 2 Harvesting from a Metal Farm
Once the timer finishes, use the Sonic Resonator or Feedback Resonator to harvest the resource. The timer will then reset for the next harvest cycle.
Note! Always harvest the grown resource before touching the input slot. Removing the ore during the farming process or before harvesting will reset all progress.

All Resource Production Times

Resource Duration
Titanium 2 minutes
Copper
Quartz
Salt
Silver 10 minutes
Lead
Sulfur
Gold
Lithium
Celestine
Creature Enamel
Conduit Crystal
Atacamite 20 minutes
Troilite

Having multiple Metal Farms running is the most efficient way to maintain a steady supply of rarer materials. Since each farm only needs one input ore and that ore is not consumed, a single piece of Troilite, Atacamite, or Conduit Crystal can be used to produce resources indefinitely.
