Best Power Source in Subnautica 2

Recommended Power Sources

Power Source Recommendation Details
Subnautica 2 Hydroelectric Turbine Hydroelectric Turbine ★★★★★ [Max Energy Output]
+12 Energy / sec
[Evaluation]
The best overall power source. Provides infinite passive energy with no maintenance required.
Subnautica 2 Bioreactor Bioreactor ★★★★★ [Max Energy Output]
Up to +20 Energy / sec
[Evaluation]
Produces extremely high energy output, but requires constant fuel refills.
Subnautica 2 Thermal Plant Thermal Plant ★★★・・ [Max Energy Output]
Up to +16 Energy / sec
[Evaluation]
Excellent passive energy source, though limited to high-temperature zones.
Subnautica 2 Solar Panel Solar Panel ★★・・・ [Max Energy Output]
+1 to +8 Energy / sec
[Evaluation]
Excellent in the early-game, but becomes useless below 200 meters.

All Power Sources and Evaluation

Hydroelectric Turbine

★★★★★
[Energy Output]
+12 Energy per second
[How to Craft]
- Titanium x3
- Copper x3
- Silver x3

Hydroelectric Turbines currently rank as one of the best overall power source thanks to their fully automated energy production. Once installed in an underwater current, they generate a constant supply of electricity with zero fuel costs or maintenance requirements. To maximize efficiency, multiple turbines can even be stacked within the same current for significantly higher power generation.

Needs Nearby Currents and Transmitters

Subnautica 2 Hydroelectric Turbines and Power Transmitter

The main limitation is placement flexibility. Your base must be built close to underwater currents, and you will also need Power Transmitters to route energy back to your base.

Bioreactor

★★★★★
[Energy Output]
Up to +20 Energy per second
[How to Craft]
- Titanium Ingot x2
- Copper Ingot x2

The Bioreactor offers the highest potential energy output at +20 Energy per second, making it one of the best choices for powering large late-game bases. It performs especially well in deep-sea locations, converting fish and plant materials directly into fuel.

Requires Constant Fuel Management

Subnautica 2 Bioreactor Fuel Management

Its biggest weakness is maintenance. Players must regularly refill the Bioreactor with fuel to avoid unexpected power failures, which can become tedious during long explorations. You'll also want a Growbed if you are installing it.

Thermal Plant

★★★・・
[Energy Output]
+1 to +16 Energy per second
[How to Craft]
- Titanium x3
- Copper x3
- Gold x3

Thermal Plants are excellent late-game alternatives, especially when building a base near Thermal Vents in the Graveyard biome. Their energy generation scales directly with environmental heat, meaning placing them closer to active heat sources greatly increases power output.

Restricted by Heat Source Placement

The downside is their heavy environmental dependence. To consistently reach the maximum +16 energy output, the structure must sit extremely close to high-temperature zones, often forcing players to use Power Transmitters to safely transfer electricity back to the base.

Solar Panel

Power SourceRecommendation and Details
Subnautica 2 Solar Panel Solar Panel[Recommendation]
★★・・・
[Energy Output]
+1 to +8 Energy per second
[How to Craft]
- Titanium x1
- Quartz x2

Solar Panels dominate the early game because of their cheap crafting requirements and easy setup. They provide enough electricity to support small starter bases comfortably, Fabricators, and base facilities during your first few hours of progression.

Useless at Night and in Deep Water

Subnautica 2 Solar Panel at Night

Their effectiveness drops heavily during nighttime, and they completely stop producing power once your base extends beyond the 200-meter depth range, making them unusable for deeper biomes and bases.
