What is Drinking Water

Essential to Survive

Subnautica 2 Water Meter

Drinking Water is one of the core survival mechanics in Subnautica 2. Your Water Meter is represented by the blue circle at the bottom-left corner of the screen, and you must keep it filled to survive.

Water Meter Caps at 100

Subnautica 2 Water Meter Cap at 100

Your maximum Water Meter is capped at 100. With this limit, carrying 1 to 2 Water bottles is usually enough for early exploration, allowing you to save inventory space for materials and tools.

Running Out of Water Causes Death

Unlike Starvation, which only drains your HP when depleted, reaching 0 Water will immediately kill you. Always bring enough Water before exploring distant biomes or cave systems.

How to Get Water

Craft Water at the Fabricator

Subnautica 2 Crafting Water at the Fabricator

Once you have gathered Water Slugs, head inside your Lifepod and interact with the Fabricator. Open the Sustenance tab and select "Water" to craft it. Crafting one bottle requires 1 Water Slug and is processed instantly.

How to Find and Catch Water Slugs

Subnautica 2 Water Slugs in the Coral Reefs

The easiest early-game way to get Water is by collecting Water Slugs, which are commonly found in the Coral Reefs biome near your Lifepod. Simply approach them to pick them up, but make sure you have enough free inventory space first.

You can easily find them crawling around patches of orange seagrass. Their bright, neon-blue color contrasts sharply with the orange plants, making them stand out during the day.

Easier to Spot at Night

Water Slugs become even easier to track down at night because they emit a noticeable bio-luminescent glow against the dark water.

How to Manage Water Meter and Tips

Drink Water When Meter is Below 50%

Subnautica 2 Water Meter at 47

To avoid wasting hydration, it is best to drink Water only when your Water Meter falls below 50. Since a basic Water bottle restores 40 Water, drinking too early can waste some of the restored hydration and reduce inventory efficiency during long trips.

Eat Water Slugs in Emergencies

Subnautica 2 Water Slug Effects

If you run out of Water far from your base, you can eat a Water Slug directly from your inventory. This restores a small amount of hydration but reduces your Food Meter, so it should only be used in emergencies.

Check Supply Crates and Wreckages

Supply Crates and wreckage areas often contain Water bottles and Nutrient Blocks. Since these items do not spoil, they are excellent emergency supplies to keep in storage or carry during expeditions.

Use Isotonic Water in the Mid-Late Game

Subnautica 2 Isotonic Water

As exploration routes become longer and more dangerous, regular Water may no longer be enough. In the mid-to-late game, Isotonic Water provides better hydration efficiency and becomes a more effective option for long expeditions.

How to Craft Isotonic Water

You can craft Isotonic Water by combining Flash Slugs and Salt at the Fabricator.
