What Are Blackboxes in Subnautica 2?

Blackboxes are flight recorder capsules left behind by the colonists of the Cicada. Each one belongs to a specific colonist. Pick one up and NOA, your AI companion, plays back a postmortem recording of how that person died.

They are not optional collectibles. Recovering Blackboxes is how the story moves forward. NOA uses them to unlock new signals and point you toward new locations. In Survival Mode, the game sends you through them in a specific order.

How to Find Each Blackbox

Anita

Anita has two Blackboxes.

Box 1: 160m North-Northeast of the Lifepod

Swim north-northeast from the Lifepod. Look for a large underwater tree with a bright pink flower. That is an Angel Comb Jelly. The Blackbox is on a platform beside it. Before you leave, interact with the flower. This unlocks the Digestion Adaptation, which lets you eat local flora and sea creatures.

Box 2: 1,796m East of the Lifepod

Located 1,796m East of the Lifepod in the Power Plant region. The best way to reach this location is to travel to the base of the Power Plant and ascend near the final Angel Comb. Anita's blackbox is beside a shale rock and near a dive elevator.

Blackbox - Unknown

Found in an unnamed Cicada wreck 582m below the Lifepod, slightly southwest. This is one of the deepest Blackboxes in the early-accessible area. Prepare extra oxygen and supplies before diving.

Chap "Chap" Sovann

Chap has two Blackboxes.

Box 1: 221m Southeast of the Lifepod

Head southeast from the Lifepod. Look for a rocky crag with stone pillars. Find the tunnel opening and look for a hatch. Go inside and interact with the biobed. This gives you the Blackbox and an inventory slot upgrade.

Nearby Scans

While here, scan the Repair Tool, Bioreactor, and a few more items before leaving. This location is worth a thorough sweep.

Box 2: 387m North of the Lifepod (Old Habitat)

Located underneath the hole where you find the Mantis Blackbox inside the Old Habitat. Collect it on the same visit as the Mantis, Mogami, Quaker, and Wu boxes.

Chen "Eddy" Wei

Located 565m Southeast of the Lifepod inside the Hot Caves. The cave entrance is South-Southeast of the heat-emitting coral. You will need the Heat Tolerance Adaptation to survive the temperature in this area.

E "Thing Two" Terbish

Located 392m North of the Lifepod, near Mogami's Blackbox inside the Old Habitat. Collect it on the same visit as the other Old Habitat boxes.

Iso

Located 1,782m East of the Lifepod inside the Cicada Wreck (EVA Prep). This is a late-game location. You must repair the broken door to access the interior, then check the dining table for the Blackbox.

What to Bring

Bring the Repair Tool. The door cannot be opened without it. While inside, scan the Bioscanner fragment if you have not already.

K. "Ander" Anand

Located 488m Southeast of the Lifepod in the Hot Caves near K. "Wander" Wangmo's blackbox.

Wander / K. "Wander" Wangmo

Wander has three Blackboxes.

Box 1: 476m East-Southeast of the Lifepod

Inside an underwater cave, 476m East-Southeast of the Lifepod.

Box 2: 245m South-Southwest of the Lifepod

Inside the hole beneath the Spider Dome. You'll need a Sonic Resonator to blast the bloom blocking the entrance.

Box 3: 477m Northwest of the Lifepod

Located east of the central heat-emitting coral, between two Stagged Mephits. Scan the Stagged Mephit plant while you are here if you have not already.

Marc "Rowboat" Rho

Located 495m Southeast of the Lifepod inside the Hot Caves near the central thermal vent and Rasa's blackbox.

Mogami "Mogami" Kinu

Located 392m North of the Lifepod in the room before the Mantis Blackbox inside the Old Habitat. Collect it alongside the Mantis, Thing Two, Quaker, Wu, and Chap boxes during the same visit.

Phoebe "Gram" Grammaticas

Located 488m East-Southeast of the Lifepod inside the underwater cave, beneath the large central heat-emitting corals. This cave cluster also contains the Rowboat, Eddy, and Zip boxes.

Qing "Twinkle" Xing

Located 478m Southeast of the Lifepod in the Hot Caves above K. "Wander" Wangmo and K. "Ander" Anand's blackboxes.

Quaker

Located 390m North of the Lifepod in the room above the Mantis Blackbox inside the Old Habitat. NOA will not reveal this signal until you collect Tuba's Blackbox first.

Before You Enter

Equip the Oxygen Control biomod before going in. Most of the Old Habitat is flooded, and oxygen runs low fast inside.

While here, scan the Sonic Resonator, both Battery Terminals, the Wakemaker Fragment, and the Scanner Station.

Rasa "Raster" Niauronyte

Located 483m Southeast of the Lifepod in the central thermal vents. Sitting on top of a rock.

Ruby

Ruby has two Blackboxes.

Box 1: 403m North-Northeast of the Lifepod

Found between rocks shaped like a ribcage. Follow the NOA marker. A Tadpole transport fragment is nearby. Scan it before leaving.

Box 2: 1,420m East of the Lifepod

Inside the underwater cave beneath the Needler Nest. This is a mid-to-late game location. Watch out for Needlers in the area.

Sean "Sean" Harris

Located 453m Northwest of the Lifepod, deep within the Heat Biome. Look for a small entryway that will lead you to an air pocket.

S. "Ganzo" Ganzorig

Located 442m Southeast of the Lifepod, in the Hot Caves. Look for a dead Coral Crab just before you reach the central thermal vents.

Singh

Singh has four Blackboxes.

Box 1: 213m North-Northeast of the Lifepod

On the sand near a platform under a small cliff. One of the earliest boxes you can find, accessible almost immediately after leaving the Lifepod.

Box 2: 405m Southeast of the Lifepod

Inside a coral dome. Follow the NOA marker southeast from the Lifepod.

Box 3: 400m Northeast of the Lifepod

Underneath a tentacle of a BFJ (Behemoth Finger-Legged Jelly) near the Old Habitat.

Box 4: 2,023m East of the Lifepod

Located 786m past the Alien Ruins inside the Cicada Wreck (Therapy Room). This is a late-game location.

Tuba

Located 238m North-Northeast of the Lifepod inside the last section of Camp One. Enter through the tube underground.

While here, scan the Scanner Station, Wakemaker Fragment, and Power Cell Terminal before leaving.

Wu "Wu" Lianghai

Located 405m North of the Lifepod in the room before the Mogami Blackbox inside the Old Habitat. Collect it on the same visit as the other Old Habitat boxes.

Tziporah "Zip" Malk / Zip

Zip has two Blackboxes.

Box 1: 485m East-Southeast of the Lifepod

Deep inside the underwater cave beneath the central heat-emitting coral, sitting on an Angel Comb root at the lowest point. This is also the box you retrieve for the Tadpole Pens keycode quest. Scan the Thermal Plant fragment nearby before leaving.

Box 2: 2,092m East of the Lifepod

Lying on the seabed near the entrance of the Metal Farms. This is a late-game location.

Zygimantis "Mantis" Tarvydas

Located 388m North of the Lifepod inside the Old Habitat. Found in the southeast room after climbing down from the Quaker Blackbox.
