Table of Contents

Star Locations and Efficient Defeat Methods

Thief's Way

In the 4th area, it's a treasure chest you get while moving two planks. If you defeat the dog in the area, another one will come running, so be mindful of its running path to defeat many of them.

Kero Sewers

An area with 4 spinning rats. The Boos are at the edge of the screen and hard to defeat, so it's recommended to lure them near the center before getting the Star. Boos will approach Mario if you turn your back to them.

Moleville

An area with Bob-ombs on a narrow path. If you fall off the first narrow path, you won't be able to defeat most enemies, so watch your step while taking out the Bob-ombs.

Sea

The area after the shop. The starfish are placed separately above and below, so calmly climb the wooden boxes.

Land's End Underground 1

Right after coming down from the antlion pit. The geckos move around a bit, making them hard to hit, but you have plenty of time, so take them down calmly.

Land's End Underground 2

The area after descending from the antlion pit, proceeding further, and dropping into a hole. Talk to the character behind the wooden box and pay 400 coins for a treasure chest with a Star to appear. You'll be cutting it close on time to defeat all the geckos, so plan your route beforehand.

Can Be Purchased Twice

If you talk to them again after buying the Star, they will go look for another one. When you visit again, they will sell it to you for 800 coins, but it's very expensive, so there's no need to force yourself to buy it.

Nimbus Land

A Star available only before defeating Valentina. The Bluebirds are constantly moving, so it's easier to hit them if you are mindful of the foreground and background lines. Note that its effect time is shorter than other Stars.

Barrel Volcano

The 4th area. There are few enemies nearby, so proceed to the next area immediately. The passage is narrow and easy to get stuck in, so doing a practice run beforehand will help you proceed smoothly.

Tips for Leveling with Stars

Defeat as Many Enemies as Possible

Defeat as many enemies as possible

While the Star is active, Mario becomes invincible and can defeat enemies just by touching them. The more enemies you defeat, the more experience you gain, so try to hit and defeat as many as possible.

Return to the Title Screen if You Fail

If you couldn't defeat enemies as you'd hoped, return to the title screen and reload from the autosave. The game should have autosaved when you moved to the area right before getting the Star, so you can retry as many times as you like.

Be Careful When Changing Areas

It seems the game doesn't autosave while a Star is active, but if you change areas after the Star ends, it will autosave. You won't be able to return to the autosave from right before the Star, so be careful not to change areas if you want to retry.

A Sound Plays Just Before the Star Ends

Just before the Star's time runs out, an alarm sound separate from the BGM will play. This is the signal that the Star is about to end, so if you want to avoid battles, be careful not to run into enemies in your haste.

Is the Infinite Star Leveling Glitch Possible?

You Cannot Level Up With the Infinite Star Glitch

In the remake, there's a system where you choose a save to return to when you're defeated. Not only your progress, but also all acquired experience and items will revert to the state at the time of the save, so the infinite Star glitch, which involves using the Star repeatedly, is not possible.

What is the Infinite Star Glitch?

The infinite Star glitch was a technique possible in the original version. In the original, when you were defeated, your experience points remained, but only your game progress reverted to the save point. By using this, you could use the Star repeatedly by getting defeated after using it.
