Chains Are Important for High Scores

When the star you fire hits a shell, it creates more stars, starting a chain. The score doubles with each chain, so aiming for chains is crucial for getting a high score.
Wait for Shells to Accumulate Before Firing

To get a high score, you want to get as many chains as possible, so it's recommended to wait until a certain number of shells have accumulated on the screen before firing.
Staying at the Edge of the Screen Makes Dodging Easier

It's difficult to dodge shells and stars near the center, so the edges of the screen are recommended. It's best to stay near either the left or right edge of the screen and move as needed.
You Can Use 3 Buttons to Mash When Down

When you're down, you can mash all three buttons: A, B, and Y. If it's easier for you to mash than with just one button, it's recommended to use all of them to try and recover.

Beetle Mania Rules and Trivia
Move the Beetle Left and Right to Fire Stars

Beetle Mania is a game where you control a beetle, shoot stars, and hit shells to earn points. The controls are very simple, consisting only of moving left and right and firing stars.
Controls
D-Pad or Left Stick Left/Right | Move |
---|---|
A/B/Y Button | Attack Recover when down (mash) |
+ Button | Pause/Retire |
Get Points by Hitting Shells with Stars

When a fired star hits a shell, you get 1 point. When a star hits a shell, the shell explodes, releasing multiple red stars. If those hit, you get 2 points for each. After that, the score continues to double with each chain, to 4 points, 8 points, and so on.
You Go Down if You're Hit by Shells or Red Stars

If you are hit by a shell or the red stars that appear after a shell explodes, you will go down. You can recover by mashing the buttons within a 3-count, but the number of mashes required to recover increases each time you go down.
Getting a Heart Reduces the Mashes Needed to Recover

When the shells reach a certain chain count, a heart will fall. If you get this heart, the number of mashes required to recover when you go down will be reduced.
The Background Changes Depending on Your Party

As a bit of trivia, if you put Geno or Peach in the middle of your three-person party, the background of Beetle Mania will change to the sky. This doesn't affect the gameplay itself, but give it a try if you want a change of scenery.
