How to Make Big Poe Appear

Appears When Adult Link Rides a Horse

Appears When Adult Link Rides a Horse

Big Poe in Ocarina of Time will only appear if you're an adult and riding a horse. You'll also need a Bow to defeat it, so you need to clear the Forest Temple and obtain a horse before you can start hunting for Big Poe.

Regular Poe Appears When on Foot

Regular Poe Appears When on Foot

If you're on foot, a regular Poe will appear instead of Big Poe. You can defeat and catch it too, but it's a different enemy from Big Poe.

Move Away if You Lose Sight of It

If Big Poe doesn't reappear after you lose sight of it, move away from the spawn location for a bit. It will spawn again once you return.

How to Defeat and Catch Big Poe

Hit It with Two Arrows to Defeat It

You can defeat Big Poe in Ocarina of Time by riding your horse and hitting it with two arrows. If you don't have a Bow yet, progress through the game until you reach the Forest Temple, where you can obtain the Fairy Bow.

Keep Your Speed Down for Easier Hits

Speeding up makes it harder to aim, so avoid dashing. It also helps to keep Big Poe directly ahead of you and ride straight toward it, which makes landing your shots easier.

Defeat It on Foot Won't Make a Big Poe

If you get off your horse and defeat it that way, catching it will only give you a regular Poe, not a Big Poe. Make sure you're riding your horse when you land the final blow.

Make Sure It Doesn't Flee Toward a Wall

Big Poe will vanish if it hits a wall while fleeing. Try to encounter it in open areas so its escape route doesn't lead it into a wall.

Use Switch 2 Rewind if It Escapes

Hold(default setting)

If you're playing on Switch 2, you can use the rewind feature to reduce arrow loss when you miss. By default, you can activate rewind by holding the - Button.

An Empty Bottle Lets You Catch It

Catching Big Poe

Once you defeat Big Poe, you can catch and store it in an Empty Bottle. If you don't have an Empty Bottle, it will get away and you'll have to defeat it all over again, so make sure to bring one with you.

Uses and How to Sell Big Poe

Sell it at the Hyrule Castle Ghost Shop

You can sell Big Poe at the Ghost Shop in Hyrule Castle as an adult. Each one nets you 50 Rupees and 100 coupons. Regular Poe only sells for 10 Rupees and doesn't give any coupons.

Equip and Use It Before the Shopkeeper

Simply talking to the shopkeeper while holding a bottle with a Poe inside won't sell it. You need to equip the bottle as an item and use it in front of the shopkeeper to sell it.

Sell All 10 to Get an Empty Bottle

Sell All 10 to Get an Empty Bottle

Once you sell all 10 Big Poe and accumulate 1000 coupons, you'll receive an Empty Bottle. Empty Bottles let you carry specific items that can heal you or revive you when you're knocked out.
