Ice Cavern Location

Ride the Ice Floes at Zora's Fountain

In Ocarina of Time, the Ice Cavern can be reached by riding the ice floes at Zora's Fountain. To get to Zora's Fountain, head through the passage beside King Zora in Zora's Domain.

First, head to Zora's River from the northeast of Hyrule Field. Play Zelda's Lullaby in front of the waterfall at the far end of Zora's River to gain entry to Zora's Domain.

Pass by King Zora to Reach Zora's Fountain

King Zora in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

On the second floor of Zora's Domain, you will find King Zora encased in red ice. You cannot free him at this point, so pass by him and head to Zora's Fountain.

Cross the Ice Floes to Reach the Ice Cavern

The entrance to the Ice Cavern is located to the north of Zora's Fountain. Ice floes are drifting across the water, so hop across them to make your way to the Ice Cavern. You cannot land on the ice floe closest to the shore and the cavern from the water, so if you fall in, you will need to restart from the second-closest floe.

There Is a Piece of Heart to the East of the Fountain

There is a Piece of Heart on the east side of the fountain. Carefully hop across the rotating ice floes to progress and you will be able to collect the Piece of Heart.

Break Icicles and Follow the Path

Once you enter the Ice Cavern, follow the path ahead. Icicles sticking up from the ground can be broken with your sword, and icicles falling from the ceiling won't hit you as long as you keep walking.

Defeat All Freezards in the Room

Freezard in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

There are 4 Freezards in the room. Defeat them with your sword or Din's Fire. Hitting a Freezard with the Hookshot lets you close the gap reliably. One Freezard periodically changes position, so prioritize taking it out when you spot it. Defeat all of them to advance to the next room.

Hit Freezards After They Finish Their Breath Attack

A Freezard has a long recovery window after its breath attack, so it's best to strike right after the breath ends. The spinning blades around it follow a fixed path, so make sure not to stand in their trajectory.

Avoid the Blades and Collect 5 Silver Rupees

In the next room, you need to collect 5 Silver Rupees. Grab 3 from the spinning blade area, 1 from the spot surrounded by blue icicles, and jump from the raised platform to collect the last one. Once you have all 5, proceed to the next room.

The Blades Won't Reach You at the White Edges

The spinning blades can't reach you if you stay at the white edges of the room. Move to the edge if a blade is about to catch up with you.

Climb the Ledges and Hop Across to Advance

Blue Fire in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Climb the ledge on the right side of the room and hop across platforms toward the Blue Fire. If you fall, you'll have to restart from the ledge, so proceed carefully.

Defeat Keese with Your Bow Before They Freeze You

Ice Keese in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

If the flying Ice Keese hit you, you'll be frozen solid, so take them out first for a smoother run.

Collect Blue Fire in an Empty Bottle

Ocarina of Time - Bluefire

Once you reach the Blue Fire, use an Empty Bottle in front of it to collect the flame. If your bottle already contains something, you'll need to empty it first.

Melt the Red Ice and Obtain the Dungeon Map

Dungeon Map in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

After collecting the Blue Fire, head toward the Red Ice along the path. Melt the Red Ice with the Blue Fire and open the treasure chest to obtain the Dungeon Map.

Get Blue Fire and Return to the Blade Room

Ocarina of Time - Bluefire

After obtaining the Dungeon Map, collect Blue Fire again. Then retrace your steps back to the spinning blade room.

Melt the Red Ice to the West and Proceed

The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time Image

There is Red Ice on the west side of the spinning blade room. Melt it with Blue Fire to advance.

Melt the Red Ice to the East to Obtain the Compass

Red Ice to the east in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

There is also Red Ice on the east side, and melting it leads to the Compass. You don't need it just to clear the Ice Cavern, so feel free to skip it.

Move Ice Platforms and Collect 5 Silver Rupees

In this room, push the ice platforms to collect 5 Silver Rupees. One Rupee can be grabbed without using a platform, but 3 require you to move a platform and ride it. The last Rupee is covered in Red Ice, so use the Blue Fire in the southwest corner of the room to melt it.

A Fallen Platform Returns to Its Starting Point

If a platform falls into the water, it will respawn at its starting position. If you push it the wrong way, drop it in the water and try again.

Refill Blue Fire and Proceed to the Next Room

Ocarina of Time - Bluefire

Collecting all 5 Silver Rupees will unlock the next room. You will need Blue Fire to get through the next room, so collect it from the southwest corner of the room before moving on. If you have multiple Empty Bottles, filling two of them with Blue Fire will make things easier.

Melt the Red Ice Ahead for the Boss Fight

Strategy Tips
- Keep your distance and observe until it attacks
- Bait out a whiff and punish the recovery

Melt the Red Ice in the corridor to reach the boss room. Keep your distance until it attacks, then punish the White Wolfos when it whiffs.

Obtain the Iron Boots and Watch the Cutscene

Ocarina of Time - Serenade of Water

Defeating the White Wolfos will make a treasure chest appear. Open it to obtain the Iron Boots. A cutscene will then begin, and you will learn the Serenade of Water.

Equip the Iron Boots and drop into the hole

After the cutscene, equip the Iron Boots and drop into the hole behind the treasure chest. Open the underwater door and follow the path to return to the room where the Freezards were.

Take Off Iron Boots in Freezard Room to Move Faster

While wearing the Iron Boots, your walking speed is greatly reduced. Once you reach the room where the Freezards were, take the Iron Boots off.

Refill Blue Fire and Return to Zora's Domain

Ocarina of Time - Blue Fire

You will also need Blue Fire in Zora's Domain. Return to either the room where you got the Dungeon Map, the room where you got the Compass, or the room with the moving platforms to refill your Blue Fire, then head back to Zora's Domain.

To Obtaining Zora's Tunic

Use Blue Fire on King Zora

King Zora in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Once you return to Zora's Domain, use the Blue Fire on King Zora. The Red Ice will melt, and you will be able to speak with King Zora.

Receive Zora's Tunic from King Zora

Ocarina of Time - Zora

Talk to King Zora on his throne to receive Zora's Tunic. It is required to clear the Water Temple, so make sure to pick it up.
