Intro - Until Meeting the Great Deku Tree

Choose Your Name and Start the Game

Ocarina of Time - Name Selection

When you start Ocarina of Time, the first thing to do is choose a name for the protagonist (from here on referred to as Link). Once you choose a name and select a save slot, the game begins.

Once You Can Move, Head Outside

Once you can move in Ocarina of Time, head outside

After the intro cutscene, the game moves into Link's house. Head outside once you gain control of Link.

Enter the Hole at the Forest Training Center

Kokiri Forest in Ocarina of Time

Once you are outside, head towards the Forest Training Center on the southwest of the village. The Forest Training Center resembles a fenced-off area at the top of a slope.

Crawl Through Holes with the A button

Ocarina of Time - Crawling Input

The back of the Forest Training Center may look like a dead end wall, but there is a small hole you can crawl through by crouching. You can crouch by pressing the A button.

Dodge Boulders and Progress for the Sword

Ocarina of Time - Kokiri Sword

There are large boulders rolling around inside the Forest Training Center, so avoid them as you make your way towards the back end. Follow the same path the boulders travel, then open the treasure chest at the very end to obtain the Kokiri Sword before leaving the Forest Training Center.

Collect Rupees Along the Way

Ocarina of Time - Blue Rupee

Rupees (money) are scattered on the ground inside the Forest Training Center. Since you require 40 Rupees to progress the story, picking them up as you proceed will help progress the story smoothly.

Gather 40 Rupees to Buy a Shield

Ocarina of Time - Deku Shield

After obtaining the sword, head inside the shop to the east and buy the Deku Shield. It costs 40 Rupees, so earn money from cutting grass and other methods.

You Only Need 35 Rupees

Ocarina of Time - Hidden Rupees

There are 5 Rupees hidden behind the back corner of the shop, so you really only need 35 Rupees before heading into the shop. Keep this in mind as collecting Rupees this early can be a time consuming process.

Earn Rupees by Jumping Across the Stepping Stones

Simply jumping across the stepping stones in the pond outside of the shop will mysteriously earn you 5 Rupees. Even better, going in and out of a house resets this method, allowing you to farm Rupees infinitely.

Talk to the NPC Blocking the Eastern Passage

Ocarina of Time - Mido

Once you have equipped the sword and shield, talk to Mido who is blocking the eastern passage. If you have both the sword and shield, he will move out of your way.

Defeat Enemies and Follow the Path

Defeat enemies and follow the path in Ocarina of Time

Follow the path and defeat the Deku Baba around the bend as you proceed. The Deku Sticks you obtain are essential items for completing the game, so try to collect about 3 of them.

Reach the End for a Cutscene

Ocarina of Time - Great Deku Tree

After exiting the linear path, a conversation scene with the Great Deku Tree will begin, and you will then proceed directly into the interior of the Great Deku Tree.
