There are four Empty Bottles in total in Ocarina of Time - three obtainable in the child era and one in the adult era.
Clear the Cucco-Guessing Game at Lon Lon Ranch
The first Empty Bottle is obtained as a reward for clearing the Cucco-guessing game that Talon offers at Lon Lon Ranch during the child era.
Strategy Points
- Pick up all the regular Cuccos before starting
- Start the game from a position where the center of the room is as visible as possible
Picking up a Cucco makes a green arrow appear above it, so after the game starts, just look for the Cucco with no arrow. It also helps to start the game by talking to Talon from near the wall, so you can watch which Cucco flies away.

The second Empty Bottle is received from a woman as a reward for catching the Cuccos scattered around Kakariko Village during the child era and throwing them into the pen.

Obtained by Giving Princess Ruto's Letter to King Zora
The third Empty Bottle is obtained by getting the bottled Princess Ruto's Letter at Lake Hylia after obtaining the Silver Scale in the child era, then handing it to King Zora, who returns the bottle to you.
Guaranteed to Get It Through the Story
You will always obtain the bottle containing Princess Ruto's Letter as you progress through the Zora's Domain storyline. If you haven't gotten there yet, prioritize progressing the story.

The fourth Empty Bottle is obtained by defeating the 10 Big Poes found on Hyrule Field during the adult era and selling the souls you receive to the Ghost Shop in the jar room in Hyrule Castle Market.
You Must Ride Epona and Shoot with the Bow
To obtain a Big Poe Soul, you need Epona (the horse) and the Fairy Bow and arrows obtained in the Forest Temple. Be careful, as defeating a Big Poe without riding Epona will only give you a regular Poe Soul.
