The Crank can be obtained in the first wind mill. its located above it & attached to a gear.

The crank is an item to be obtained while progressing in Chapter 4 - Reservoir. The Crank is a key item allowing you to interact with the yellow gears in the windmill(s) and to give power to the control room to drain the water, as well as to be able to fight Moreau. You need to use it on two of the gears marked in yellow on the windmill to be found in Lake Bottom Village.
Using The Crank
You will be able to use the crank by approaching mechanical doors and interacting with the keybind pop up showing to use the Crank.

The crank will be used immediately after it is obtained. It must be used twice here for to continue. The yellow gear in the above image is where you will use it.

There are places near the village where you can use the crank, and after obtaining the crank, the scope of exploration expands. However, it has nothing to do with the story, so it is just a side trip for the purpose of collecting items.
Where To Use And What To Get
In the south of the village (Moreau's Experiment Station), you can get a magnum. It's a very powerful gun, so it's useful in times of need. It is advisable to make a detour and secure it as much as possible.
