No Direct Story Connection
While NieR Replicant and NieR:Automata share the same world, their timelines are far apart, so there is no direct story connection. The game is designed so that you can enjoy it without having played Replicant.
Set in the World After Ending D

Automata takes place several thousand years after Replicant's Ending D. The time period has advanced significantly, so the remnants of the Replicant era have completely vanished, replaced by a futuristic setting.
▼To the NieR Series TimelineSome Characters are Shared
In Automata, characters with the same names as those from Replicant appear. However, they are not the same individuals but different entities, so the events of the Replicant era are not highly relevant.
Emil

In Automata, he appears as a shop that roams the map. By progressing through events, it is revealed that he is not the original Emil from Replicant, but one of his clones. He also makes remarks that allude to the events of Replicant upon seeing the Lunar Tear.
Devola & Popola

They appear as an older model of android. They feel a sense of guilt because androids of the same model (the Devola & Popola from Replicant) went berserk long ago.

Replicant is 1000 Years After DoD
The main story of Replicant (Part One/Part Two) takes place over 1000 years after Ending E of Drakengard. Remnants of human civilization from that time can be seen in various places throughout the game.
Automata Begins After Humanity's Extinction
The sequel, "NieR:Automata," is set in an era after humanity has gone extinct, following Replicant's Ending D where the protagonist's existence was erased. As several thousand years have passed, all characters, with a few exceptions, are already deceased.
