- On your 3rd playthrough or later - Collect all 30 weapons - In the final choice, select "Sacrifice my own existence..." |
Choose 'Sacrifice my own existence...' in the final choice

Similar to Ending C, first defeat Berserk Kainé. In the choice that follows, select Sacrifice my own existence to make Kainé human to proceed to Ending D.
Save Data is Temporarily Deleted

Upon reaching Ending D, all save data files with the same name will be deleted. Your pre-clear save data will become temporarily unusable, so choose carefully.
*Note: In the PS3 version, there is no Ending E, so the save data is permanently deleted. Be careful.
Restored by Playing Through Ending E

In Ending E, which was added in Ver.1.22, a new story following Ending D has been added. Clearing Ending E will restore your data from before you cleared Ending D.
Refusing Data Deletion Leads to Ending C
If you accidentally choose "Sacrifice my own existence...", at the data deletion prompt, you can return to Ending C by selecting 'No'. If you made a mistake, don't mash buttons and be sure to select 'No'.
Ending D Spoiler-filled Explanation
Returning Kainé to Her Human Form

By sacrificing his own existence, the protagonist allows Kainé to return to her original human body. In a world without the protagonist, Kainé remembers traces of him. Overcome with an indescribable emotion, she sheds tears and says, "I feel like I received something precious." The ending concludes with her and Yonah looking up at the sky.
Connects to NieR:Automata
While the protagonist and Kainé do not appear, some characters and items, such as Emil and the Lunar Tear, do.
