Requirement to Mine | Antler Pickaxe (or better) |
Copper Deposits are large immovable chunks of copper embedded into the ground. These are found exclusively in the Black Forest biome, and are a crucial path to your item progression in Valheim, as Copper Ore is required to smelt Bronze!
Note that since the Antler Pickaxe is required to mine these, this means you'll have to defeat the first boss to access this.

You'll primarily be getting Copper Ore and Stone from mining these deposits. In general, you'll be getting Stone in a much higher ratio than Copper Ore, so don't fret if you think you're getting no Copper from a deposit.

Valheim locks a significant amount of player power progression behind metals. Bronze is the first major metal you'll have access to. It will require Tin Ore as well as Copper Ore, so make sure to mine that in the Black Forest as well.

Note that Copper deposits look the same as regular rocks. Hover over the rocks to double check that they're actually copper before digging into them - you could end up wasting a lot of time if you mine a deposit without copper in it.
How To Efficiently Mine Copper
Excavate The Whole Copper Node

It's crucial to understand that only a small part of the full copper vein sticks out above ground. A large amount of it will be deep underground, requiring you to dig around it. We recommend digging a perimeter around a copper vein to establish its true size.

↑ Use your Pickaxe to dig deep down into the ground.
Prepare Carts

Given how heavy Copper Ore is, we strongly recommend building and bringing a cart with you. This will allow you to more easily transport Copper from the mining area to your base.

Advanced Technique - Troll Labor

If you're tired of mining your own copper deposits and you spot a Troll (or two...) in the vicinity, try luring the Troll over to the deposit and letting it mine Copper for you! Of course, you'll have to be very careful about dodging away from the Troll's attacks. Use this method at your own risk!
Do Copper Deposits Respawn?
Copper Deposits Do Not Respawn
From what we and others have been able to observe, once you have cleared a copper deposit, it will not respawn. This means that there is a finite amount of Copper available in the world - though given the size of the world this shouldn't be too much of a problem.
