Koga Deck - Pros / Cons

  1. Doku and Arbok Combo is Powerful
  2. You Can Collect Pokemon With Koga
  3. It's Tough When the Poison is Cured

Doku and Arbok Combo is Powerful

A powerful combo involves defeating the opponent with Grimer or Weezing and then using Arbok's attack to block their retreat. Currently, the only ways to cure poison are to retreat or evolve, so if your opponent's Pokemon cannot evolve, there is a high probability it will be knocked out.

You Can Collect Pokemon With Koga

Koga can shuffle Weezing or Muk from the Active Spot back into your hand, making it a great strategy to avoid being knocked out or to swap with a Pokemon on the Bench. Specifically, the combo of using Weezing to inflict poison → then using Koga to return it to your hand → followed by an attack with Arbok or Muk is extremely effective.

It's Tough When the Poison is Cured

This deck is designed with the premise of poisoning the opponent, so it becomes difficult to accumulate damage if they are cured through evolution. Additionally, since it is composed only of non-EX Pokemon, it struggles against builds that can achieve one-hit KOs with high-damage attacks.

Koga Deck Strategy

  1. Start with Poisoning Using Weezing
  2. Recall Weezing with Koga at the Right Moment
  3. Finish Off Strong Opponents with Muk
Start with Poisoning Using Weezing
  1. Koffing
  2. Weezing
  3. Sabrina

At the start, ideally place Weezing in the Active Spot, as it requires minimal Energy to use its attacks. If you have Sabrina in hand, use it to bring out to the Pokemon you want to KO first.

Ekans Is Strong Against Fire and Psychic Types

Check your opponent's Energy Zone. If they’re using Fire or Psychic Types, using Ekans to quickly evolve into Arbok for a swift attack can be effective. You can knock out blockers like Moltres ex or Mewtwo ex before they retreat.

Recall Weezing with Koga at the Right Moment
  1. Koga
  2. Arbok

Once you’ve poisoned the target, use Koga to return Weezing to your hand, and switch to Arbok in the Active Spot to attack. Since switching is restricted, it ensures the Pokemon will be Knocked Out.

Calculate Poison Damage to Decide on Switching

The poison’s 10-damage effect continues during the opponent’s phase. If the opponent’s Pokemon fainted from poison damage, switching out may be unnecessary.

Finish Off Strong Opponents with Muk
  1. Grimer
  2. Muk

For high HP Pokemon, poison them first and follow up with Muk’s attacks to inflict heavy damage. This is especially effective against Pokemon that would knock out Arbok in one hit.
