Talk To Villagers Daily

Once a day, you can speak to a given villager to increase your friendship level with them. This is a "do it or lose it" daily feature, so make sure to at least talk to Bachelors & Bachelorettes daily.

Give Villagers Presents They Love

Give Villagers Presents They Love

Once per day, players can give a present to a villager to increase their friendship level. Place items in your inventory slot and move the cursor to them, then get near the villager and press "Y" to hand over the present. If the villager likes the item, you'll get a bigger bonus to friendship.

Double Friendship Gains On Villager's Birthday

If you give a present to a villager on their birthday, you'll get 2x friendship points. Save your best presents for their birthday for better gains.

Gain Additional Friendship With Skills

Gain Additional Friendship With Skills

By speaking to villagers, you'll increase your "Communication" skill, which will further increase friendship gained. To check your current skill level, press X to open the skill interface.

How To Check Friendship / Heart Level Points

Check Your Villager Friendship In The Manual

Check Your Villager Friendship At Manual

Press X to open your manual and look up villagers. You can check your current individual friendship levels by seeing how many hearts you have. 10 is the max heart count for most villagers.

Increasing Friendship / Hearts - Benefits & Event

Romance Bachelors & Bachelorette

Special EventUnlock Conditions
Love Confession 6 Hearts & finish romance event
Propose 10 Hearts & finish romance event
(Upgrade your house to at least a log house)

By increasing your friendship with a romance candidate, you can bring your relationship with them to the next level by confessing your love, and eventually getting married. As friendship level is the prerequisite for romance, you'll want to focus on raising it daily.

Rite Of Friendship For Same-Gender Characters

When your character is the same gender as your romantic interest, you can do a Rite Of Friendship instead.
