Currently, it is not possible to explore in multiplayer with only two players. However, in a 3-player party, it is possible to become a 2-player party if someone gets disconnected due to connection issues or other unexpected reasons.
There is a Possibility of Implementation
In an official interview, Director Junya Ishizaki, reportedly stated that "the implementation of 2-player mode at release was postponed" and that "they are also considering its implementation". Let's hope it will be implemented in a future update and wait.
