Learn about Effort Values (Base Points) in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon. Read to learn all about EVs, including how to raise and earn using facilities.

Effort Value Basics and How to Raise Them

How to Lower and Check Effort Values

What are Effort Values?

Hidden Stats That Make Pokemon Stronger

Effort Values (Base Points) are one of the factors that determine a Pokemon's stats. In the game, they are called "base points" and can be allocated to stats like Attack.

Allocating Effort Values Increases Stats

Stats with allocated Effort Values will be higher than those without, making it an important system for winning battles.

You Can Specialize in Up to Two Stats

There's a limit to Effort Values; you can only allocate up to 255 to a single stat. Furthermore, the overall total is capped at 510, so it's impossible to max out all stats.

If 255 Effort Values are Allocated to Two Stats

As shown in the table below, if you allocate 255 Effort Values (Base Points) to HP and Attack, you cannot allocate Effort Values to other stats.

StatEffort Values
HP255
Attack255
DefenseCannot allocate
Sp. AtkCannot allocate
Sp. DefCannot allocate
SpeedCannot allocate

Statistically, More Than 252 is Meaningless

Due to how Pokemon stats are calculated, there's no benefit to raising Effort Values beyond 252 for a single stat. Therefore, even when specializing in two stats, it's recommended to allocate 252 to each and the remaining 6 to another stat.

Basic Way to Allocate Effort Values

The basic principle of Effort Values is to enhance a Pokemon's strengths. Looking at the Pokemon's, allocate Effort Values (Base Points) to its highest stats.

Example: Garchomp's Case

How to Earn Effort Values

Pros and Cons by Earning Method

Effort Values are important hidden stats that determine stat values. There are various ways to earn Effort Values, each with its own pros and cons.

Raising through Battles

The basic way to allocate Effort Values is by battling. Each Pokemon gives a set amount of Effort Values when defeated, so you can earn specific EVs by targeting certain Pokemon.

Earning Efficiently with Power Items

Power-series items, when held by a Pokemon, can increase the Effort Values gained. Additionally, Pokerus doubles the EVs earned.

Power Items

Raising Effort Values with Items

You can allocate Effort Values using items commonly called Vitamins. Each item gives 10 points, but be aware that you can only use items to raise a stat's EVs up to a maximum of 100.

※Each Vitamin provides 10 EVs per use.

Earning Effort Values at Facilities

Poke Pelago

At Poke Pelago's "Isle Aplenny," Pokemon can earn Effort Values based on the time they spend training. You can easily earn EVs by simply selecting the Pokemon and the stat you want to train.

Earnable Effort Values

The amount of EVs earnable at Isle Aplenny changes with its development level. Also, EVs are added every 30 minutes, and placing Poke Beans shortens this time to 15 minutes, increasing efficiency.

Facility LevelLv1Lv2Lv3
EVs Earned
(per 30 min)
+1+2+4

If you raise it to Lv3 and use Poke Beans to shorten the time, you can earn the maximum of 255 EVs in 15 hours and 45 minutes.

Festival Plaza

It's also possible to increase Effort Values at the Festival Plaza facility "Balloon Athletics." The stat increased and the amount of EVs gained vary depending on the course selected. Higher ranks yield more EVs.

How to Lower Effort Values / Reset

Effort Values Can Also Be Lowered

Effort Values can also be lowered using items. If you've allocated too many or made a mistake, lower the Effort Values.

Lowering with Berries

By feeding a Pokemon certain Berries, you can lower the Effort Values of a specific stat by "10". Unlike Vitamins like Protein, there is no limit to the number of Berries you can use, so a full reset is possible.

Berries that Lower Effort Values (Base Points)

※Each Berry lowers EVs by 10 per use.

Berry NameStat Lowered

Kelpsy BerryAttack

Lowering Using Festival Plaza

At Festival Plaza, You can order one menu item per stall.

Sets that Lower Effort Values (Base Points)

Set NameStat Lowered
Set AHP
Set BAttack
Set CDefense
Set DSp. Atk
Set ESp. Def
Set FSpeed

How to Check Effort Values

Check from "Summary"

You can check by pressing the Y button on the Pokemon's The yellow area outside the hexagonal graph represents Effort Values.

Check EV Status by Color

If the yellow area outside the hexagonal graph is light blue, the Effort Values for that stat are maxed out. If the total EVs are less than 510, this area will be orange. Stats that have reached the maximum of 252 EVs will sparkle.

Detailed Numbers Cannot Be Seen

On the Summary screen, you can only see if a stat is maxed out or not; you cannot check the exact numerical values. If you want to allocate EVs precisely, make sure to keep a careful record of how many EVs you've allocated.
