Explaining the breeding process for Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (Pokemon USUM)! This guide summarizes the methods in an easy-to-understand way for beginners!

Introduction

The First Step in Breeding

This article is for trainers who are breeding Pokemon for the first time and are thinking of trying out Rating Battles or the Battle Tree. Therefore, some important elements of breeding have been omitted.

First, Let's Try Breeding

To raise even stronger Pokemon, there are many other important factors such as breeding for Egg Moves, adjusting IVs for Hidden Power, and selecting held items and moves. First, let's try simple breeding and take on some player battles!

Table of Contents

Preparation for Breeding

Clear the Story

Breeding while progressing through the story is inefficient, and some necessary features are only unlocked after clearing it. Breeding is not necessary to complete the story, so clear the game first.

Unlock the Judge Function

After hatching 20 Eggs and clearing the story, talk to the Elite Trainer at the Battle Tree to unlock the Judge function. The Judge function allows you to determine IVs, making it indispensable for breeding.

Catch a High IV Ditto

Ditto, which can breed with any Pokemon, is very important for breeding. Preparing multiple high IV Dittos with commonly used Natures will significantly increase breeding efficiency.

Location
[Ula'ula Island] Hokulani Observatory

The Ditto 5 Are Excellent

The Ditto 5 from the mini-event have fixed IVs and Natures, which are values commonly used in battles. Play the event and catch all five.

Poke Pelago or Festival Plaza

Leveling up Poke Pelago and Festival Plaza will greatly increase efficiency. Besides making EV training easier, you can also obtain items that can maximize IVs.

Obtain Useful Items and Pokemon

Prepare useful items and Pokemon to have when breeding.

Recommended Items

ItemHow to Obtain
Effect
Destiny Knot[Ula'ula Island] Route 14
Help the person being attacked by Frillish
Passes down 5 random IVs from the two parent Pokemon to the offspring
Everstone[Melemele Island] Hau'oli City

Flame Body is Recommended for Egg Hatching

Pokemon with the Ability Flame Body, when in your party, will shorten the time it takes for Eggs to hatch.

What to Breed For

Natures Suited to the Pokemon's Characteristics

Depending on a Pokemon's Nature, one of its stats will be decreased to 0.9x, while another will be increased to 1.1x. It's important to choose a Nature that suits the Pokemon.

Aim for 5 Perfect IVs (5V)

Individual Values (IVs)

Hidden stats assigned to Pokemon. They range from 0-31, and the higher the value, the higher that stat will be when the Pokemon is raised.

Ideally, you want 5 perfect IVs (31). Max out all stats except for either Special Attack or Attack, depending on the moves you'll use.

Can Also Be Raised with Items

IVs can be maximized using items like Bottle Caps or Gold Bottle Caps. These can be obtained from Festival Plaza or Poke Pelago, so it's not a problem if you can't get 5 perfect IVs through breeding alone.

Ability

Breeding for the right Ability is also important. Even if you breed for the right Nature and IVs, it's meaningless if the Ability doesn't suit the Pokemon.

Training Bred Pokemon

Effort Value (EV) Training

Effort Values (EVs)

Hidden stats assigned to each of a Pokemon's stats. In the game, they are called "base points".

Once you've bred a Pokemon with the desired IVs, Nature, and Ability, the next step is EV training. Generally, you'll want to invest 252 EVs into two stats and 6 EVs into one stat, according to the Pokemon's base stats (species stats).

Poke Pelago is Easy

There are three ways to EV train, but the easiest method is using "Isle Aplenny" in Poke Pelago. EVs will automatically increase depending on how long you leave Pokemon there, so it's recommended.

Leveling Up

After finishing EV training, all that's left is leveling up! Defeating Pokemon will grant EVs, so make sure to finish EV training before you start leveling up.

Blissey Chaining is Recommended

Blissey chaining is the most efficient way to level up. If you also want to earn money, farming the Elite Four is also recommended.
